Eric's writings - Apology Letter and School Essay

I've been interested in Columbine for a good long while and I wanted to get your thoughts on the Eric Harris apology letter that he wrote to the driver of the van he and Dylan broke into.

After reading it, I kind of felt that he was playing a bit of reverse psychology disguised as remorse. I'm no psychologist but him telling the owner how he should feel about the act would have made him feel that way. Like when he said, "I would have felt uneasy driving in my car again knowing that someone else was in it without my permission." If he didn't think about it before the letter, he sure was thinking it then. And it makes me wonder if that was Eric's intention as a whole. Was he intentionally playing mind games with the owner or was he just telling him what he thought he wanted to hear.

Another point I'd like to raise in the school essay Eric wrote about the diversion programme was that he said, "we have been set on a track that makes it mandatory for me to be a literal angel until March of '99". I kinda wonder if that was a little foreshadowing into the plan, that he would be a literal "devil" in April. I think that the writings are so telling

Well since his real feelings about being punished for the break in were placed on his website I say that this letter is all fake. A syrupy sweet sarcastic letter designed to make himself look good. And based on the great impression he made in diversion, it worked.

As Liz said, it's fake, and he enjoyed that he was fucking them over.

It's obviously fake sincerity. I've read both the letter and his diary but the contrast is so deep

I think Eric just wanted out of Diversion so he could do what he wanted again without arising suspicion.
