Eric did mention in his journal about getting shot by police and he did try to combat them several times during the shooting, so I think Eric's plan that day was suicide by cop.

Eric had a lot of grandiose thoughts...

I wonder why he didn’t try to pull some sort of movie move and just walk out of the school shooting his gun he Had a good chance of dying on the spot but probably a very good chance of being apprehended.
