As far as infamous, I would say Charles Whitman.

Whitman has been referenced in almost every school shooting since 1966.

He was almost like a forerunner to a lot of the school shootings since his time.

There is even a movie made of it.

I chose Lanza just because I feel that there was so much media about it. I think generally speaking people would know Lanza a bit more than some of the others listed. I think plenty of people know what you are talking about when you say Virginia Tech for example but I don't think as many would know if you just mentioned Cho. I think Adam's name is pretty recognizable.

In which shootings Charles was referenced. Can you link some of the articles where they mention Charles?

I think Brenda Spencer would be more famous than quite a few on the list.

Thomas Hamilton too (certainly over here anyway).

Yes,thats high amount of attention for a 50 year old shooting, but Adam also got covered a lot: His life was told, his father, friends got interviewed.

Seung Hui Cho makes the most sense. While Eric and Dylan are arguably the most infamous, Cho was the most lethal American school shooter.

Cho would have been my first choice as he has a lot of victims.
But for most infamous it's gotta be adam lanza sandy hook caused a lot of damage.

Despite the far more shocking attack perpetrated by Lanza, I'd say that Cho is better known. If nothing else, Cho doesn't have the conspiracy theory hanging over his head and casting doubt on his actions.

I WOULD ARGUE THAT CHARLES WHITMAN IS THE 2ND NOST INFAMOUS. REFERENCES TO SHOOTING PEOPLE FROM A CLOCKTOWER HAS BECOME A COMMON REFERENCE, AND I CONSIDER THE FACT THAT HE IS REFRENCED WITHOUT NAMING HIM OR HIS LOCATION A SIGNIFIER OF HOW INFAMOUS HIS ATTACK IS. I APOLOGIZE FOR WRITING IN ALL CAPS MY KEYBOARD IS ALL FUCKED UP.

I think the fact that he had an unusual and foreign name makes him more memorable, since it makes him stand out from all the Caucasian school shooters with common first names like Adam, Eric, Dylan, Marc, Charles and etc.

Cho for sure, I was thinking maybe Charles but not enough people know who he is oddly, and it could be debated if it really is a 'school shooting'.

Charles Whitman before 2012, but definitely Adam now. I don't think many people attach Cho's name to Virginia Tech, whereas I'd say that if someone knows of Sandy Hook, there is a good chance they will know Adam's name.

Although Cho killed more people, I think that Lanza is more infamous. None of the people involved deserved to die but there's something especially sick about systematically killing young, defenseless children. Crimes against children are especially reviled in America, I think.

It's hard to say because in most cases, the victim has no chance to escape, no matter their age.

Adam Lanza, memorizable name and same goes for the school where he did the shooting. If they would just release more content regarding this massacre.

I would argue that Whitman is still the second most infamous shooter. More people know of Lanza by name, but Whitman's attack has been indirectly referenced so much, that offhand references about clock towers and sniper rifles "are a thing". This is not exclusive to the internets; many mainstream pieces of media have made indirect references via clock tower snipers, like king of the hill. Through this Whitman has had a definite observable impact on mainstream popular culture. How many times have you heard Adam be referenced on non-news, non-memorial mainstream media, either directly by his name or by the specifics of his attack?

Since the title asks which is the (second) most infamous shootER and not shootING, I'd have to say Lanza. He's the most often referenced by name. V-tech is mentioned fairly often, but most people call Cho "the shooter" presumably because his name is difficult for most Americans to pronounce. And yes, the University of Texas tower shooting was one of the first (if not THE first, I'm not sure) famous American school shootings and is often referenced vaugely, most people aren't referencing Whitman by name.

I think if you showed a person with no interest in this topic this list, the name they'd have a highest chance of recognizing would be Adam Lanza.

If the question were most famous shootING, I wouldn't know how to choose between the 3 (V-tech, Sandy Hook, or University of Texas). They're all famous in different ways for different reasons.
