A question that crossed my mind, earlier, listening to the audio of Cullen's "Columbine":

What if Neil Gardner, who usually ate his lunch in the Commons, had been in there when Eric and Dylan started their siege of the school? How different do you think the dynamic would have unfolded from that point on? Assume all other variables were the exact same.

Assuming all other variables were the same.

Neil, more than likely, would have engaged them much sooner outside from the cafeteria. They still would have probably gone inside and possibly Neil would have engaged them from there as well.

With Smoker & Taborsky arriving shortly thereafter, Eric/Dylan would have been stuck between them and Gardner. Gardner could have held a position outside by the cafeteria, inside by the cafeteria stairs, or even upstairs by the Science Area.

As soon as it started, he would have gone outside, been fired upon and went back into the commons and engaged then from there.
He would have also helped in the evacuation of students from the commos, as well as held his position at the stairs guarding the library hallway.
This would have probably forced them away from the library and the would have gone to the north side of the school around the art wing.
They porbably wouldn't have tried to go to the commons, if they were forced away multiple times.

Gardner would have gotten the jump on them because they were standing at the top of a hill in plain sight while he had the advantage of surprise sneaking up to the bottom of the hill. Most likely he neutralizes one or both of them at that point.

If either Eric or Dylan had survived their first encounter with Gardner, they would have most likely fled into the same west doors that they ultimately ended up entering. I don't think Gardner follows them, because that puts him in a shooting gallery in the west doors vestibule. Instead, Gardner probably goes back into the cafeteria and confronts them again along the north-south running library hallway, with Gardner facing north.

One thing I am fairly confident of is that Gardner does not stay outside. It's one thing to pull up to a building during a shooting and not have the cover to enter. It's quite another to be in the building when it starts. Gardner would've been in there with them and the massacre doesn't happen.

Why would a fully grown man eat in a cafeteria full of kids?

He usually did. That day was an exception.
