PostSubject: What reminds you of Columbine?   Sun Sep 29, 2013 10:25 am

What kind of stuff do you see or listen to that reminds you of either the actions of that day or the boys themselves? Stuff that before you became interested you liked anyway but are now tainted as such, that now you can't listen/see it without being reminded.

For me it's little things like obviously their names

- License plates on cars with the date they were made on them. If it's '99 or before, I often find myself wondering what they were doing that particular year.

- Dylan Thomas poetry (Dylan was named after Dylan Thomas). On my wall I have:
"Perhaps it would be best if you
Created something very new,
A dirty novel done in Erse
Or written backwards in Welsh verse,
Or paintings on the backs of vests,
Or Sanskrit psalms on lepers' chests.
But if this proved imposs-i-ble
Perhaps it would be just as well,
For you could then write what you please."

from Thomas' poem "A Letter To My Aunt" and now I look at it and I'm reminded in a weird way of Dylan.

- Anything gun related (obviously)

What's yours?

There are so many things that remind me of E/D and Columbine that I don't even know where to begin but here it goes.

1. Every time I see white vans driving by
2. People walking their Yorkies because apparently Eric had a Yorkie
3. When I find out someone has the last name Harris. It's an extremely common last name.
4. When I'm flipping through the channels and I see a movie they liked is on such as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.
5. Anytime something is related to 1999. For instance when I hear a song or see a movie that came out in 1999 and wonder if they ever got the chance to hear or see it.
6. I'm back home in Kansas and keep seeing signs for Wichita, Kansas where Eric was born.
7. One of my teachers always talked about how much he loved Jack Daniels. I wonder if ever winced at the taste too. And in DTLA there was a huge billboard advertising Jack Daniels.
8. Overland Park, Kansas is very similar to Littleton, Colorado.
9. People wearing black baseball caps and majority of the time it's backwards.
10. Whenever I see April somewhere, when it comes up in a conversation or when it's actually April.

I'm sure there are tons more but that's all I could think of for now.

Shotgun bullets, especially the ones with red casings. My Grandfather is a hunter, so I see bullets in his gun cabinet and basement. Every time I see them, I think of Columbine.

Everything. Anything related to 1999. Any kind of reference to a school shooting. Any mention of Colorado. Vodka. Anytime someone says "you know what I hate?" Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, KMFDM. Old BMWs.

This quote by a character named "Sister Peter Marie Reimondo" (played by Rita Moreno), in an episode from season five of the HBO series "Oz":

"There's no comfort in rage. Rage feeds off the soul until there's no soul left."

There's a song called "red rum" by Project Pat which I heard loads of times, incidentally I found after a long time again after viewing a columbine related video

This is a little random but about a week or so ago I was driving home from work and i passed a van that had the name 'Randy Brown' on the side. I think it belonged to some kind of electrical company but that reminded me of Columbine.

Here's another one that reminds me of E & D.

Small, crooked-mouthed, spiky-haired Calvin (Eric) with tall, lanky, furry Hobbes (Dylan). As pointed out first over at Lear's Shadow website ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ):

I was watching Friends and Chandler mentioned playing Doom. Also the newest Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie showed Mike Teavee being interviewed while playing Doom in his Denver, Colorado home which obviously reminded me of Eric.

Saw an ''okay'' teenage horror movie called ''All the Boys Love Mandy Lane''. Some details reminded me of Columbine.

Mandy has a male friend who does something twisted within the first 15 minutes of the movie. After that scene, he's on a running track at their high school wearing a t-shirt that reads ''Natural Selection''. That's how I started thinking the character would be more complex than it appears at first.

Partial spoilers ahead but, hopefully not too much:

Towards the end of the movie, there is a duo of murderers who talks of killing themselves. There are other details related to this that also connect to Columbine.

I thought that with the Natural Selection shirt appearance, the murderous-suicidal duo and other little details, there were too many elements to be purely from luck. However, I haven't been able to find from interviews if the moviemaker(s) were inspired by Columbine for these details.

A few days ago, I was watching Jackie Brown. In one scene, Samuel L.Jackson and Robert De Niro were watching a tv program called "Chicks who Loves Guns" and in this clip appears a girl with a Tec 9.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Starts at 0:24, if anyone's interested.

So, I keep wondering if Dylan become interested in this gun watching this...

Actually, everytime I hear or think about the year "1999" I can't help but think about Columbine...also, whenever I drive past a high school that looks anything like CHS.

If it was the case for me, I'd soon go batshit insane because I'm a child of the 90s so many things E & D liked were part of my teenage years and are things I still enjoy (such as Tarantino movies). As Eric wrote, he was not very original. I used to have that cassette tape from Pulp Fiction as well as the Mortal Kombat CD with songs by KMFDM and Orbital. Also, 1999 happens to be a very important year in my life (as well as March-April 1999) for other reasons than Columbine.

My high school library reminds me way too much of the old one in Columbine. Needless to say, I'm going to avoid that library.

-Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" (I listen to that song usually when I browse this forum and usually listen to a version that has been pitch-shifted up...and there's ten trillion versions out there to choose from)
-Any movie or song from 1999, but for some reason in particular, American Pie. This also reminds me of my own first couple weeks of college because it played at the student union right then (but that was 2001, not 1999.) AP is not a great movie, never was, but now it seems to conjure up a totally innocent pre-9/11 era. And I connect it to Columbine because Columbine was about teenagers and AP was the big teen movie that year.

Tons! I was a senior in high school when it happened and I'm almost the EXACT same age as Dylan (I'm 9/29/81). So many songs bring me back to that time and I wonder if Eric ever ranted about how much he hated it lol. Also, smells... especially spring rain. It's always weird to me to think that they lived and experienced a lot of what I did, more so now that they've been gone longer than they were alive.
