I think he had homicial ideation maybe he just had a fancination with weapons and felt he had to do something with them.
Similar to the case of James Robert Sheets a 14 year old in 2003 who brought a large amount of ammunition plus 3 pistols only to fire a two fatal shots in a cafeteria with no apparent motive or warning signs. The school district that James attended had another attack at a school previously with a machete at an elementary school iirc.

Some of the students that witnessed James act were also present during the stabbing, could James be one of them? No. The machete attack happened when James would be finishing up 6th grade, but the 6/7th graders in the cafeteria would have been at the stabbing
