the mother of alexandria 'lexi' aniyah rubio was one of the 19 children killed at the robb elementary shooting on may 24th 2022. her mother, kimberly mata-rubio is now announcing her campaign to run for the mayor of uvalde. she writes on social media, "your legacy is my greatest responsibility, and i will honor your life with action. this is only the beginning." mata-rubio would succeed don mclaughlin, who is pursuing a state house seat, and a special election for the remainder of his term will take place on nov. 7th.
someone on reddit had a good take: "Her critics will say she's unqualified, and the worst ones will openly accuse her of capitalizing on tragedy. Her opponent is a VP at the local bank and, crucially, a former mayor of Uvalde himself so he's got her on the experience claim. On her side is likely her ability to raise money and probably outspend her challenger. As for experience she's already not so subtly saying that it was the old order and complacency that led to the tragedy. She can also point to her experience in DC as highly qualifying. Major legislation passed a divided congress after her testimony. And she's a lifelong resident who works at the local paper so she knows the issues from an invested-citizen perspective, not just her association with a huge - but single - issue."
what do you guys think of this? i don't know how likely it is that she actually gets elected, but it's certainly an interesting and unique way to honor her daughter.
