"Dearest Sabratha.... what in the Eastern Orthodx heck is that otchestvo thing?" you might ask. Well, it is a patronymic. Basically your dad's name... the equivalent of scandinavian "son of Hrothgar", "Andersdottir" etc.

So Olegovich is "son of Oleg" and Alekseevna is "daughter of Aleksey".
