In the first few months of 1999, there were an awful lot of weird pop-culture indications that something like NBK was in the works:

* On Friday, March 12, 1999, The Rage: Carrie 2 - a movie about a high-school outcast who kills jocks - hit theaters.
* On Tuesday, March 30, 1999, Heathers - a movie about a high-school outcast who kills jocks - hit DVD.
* Before the massacre, CBS planned to air an episode of the prime-time drama series Promised Land, focusing on a school shooting, on Thursday, April 22, 1999. This episode was never shown.
* Before the massacre, The WB planned to air the season finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, focusing on the destruction of Sunnyvale High School, in May 1999. This episode was held until the fall.
* Before the massacre, ABC decided to air the TV movie Our Guys: Outrage at Glen Ridge - a dramatization of the story of some privileged high-school jocks who, among things, savagely gang-raped a retarded girl - on Monday, May 10, 1999. This movie did air as scheduled.

There are others, but that gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Was something in the air? Or is this merely after-the-fact constellation-making?

The details of the Promised Land episode are interesting:

This particular installment of Promised Land, which was originally scheduled to air just days after the tragedy, contains a story line that has a high school student plotting to kill his classmates and teachers. Adding to the weird coincidence is the fact that "Promised" was set in a Denver-area school.

"I've got to tell you -- I screened it again a couple of times after the Columbine tragedy, and it was eerie how close it was," said CBS Entertainment President Nancy Tellem. "If I didn't know that it had been written and produced long before Columbine, I wouldn't have believed it."

I think a lot of people were becoming more aware of the jock-culture in America at the time. I was a teenager when it happened, there was a lot of nerds rising up against the popular kids type stuff going on. They didn't want to be oppressed anymore so they started dressing like "freaks" as we called it in my high school. (I was one of them, I belonged to a similar group of kids like the TCM, we didn't have a "cool" name like them, though.) The 90's were an interesting time. I think there was "something in the air."
