Denis Muravyov and Katerina Vlasova

They were young, and probably didn't plan out much of anything besides to run away. The hasty shooting of the girl's mother, then shooting at the responding police sealed their fate. So they could either surrender and be separated and likely jailed, or commit suicide. They chose to die together. Very stupid and very sad at the same time.

Police gathered waiting further down the road after giving Denis and Katya 40 minutes to either surrender or be apprehended. (They had no knowledge that they had kept one gun.)

If he really loved her he wouldn't have shot her. If a guy truly loves a girl, he wouldn't care if it is him who makes her happy, or if it is someone else, just as long as she is happy. I don't care how much of these two were in love and were resorting to the tragic Romeo and Juliet end, you don't shoot the girl that you love in the face with a shotgun.

True, although you have to consider the fact that they only had one Shotgun at this point. And they weren't going to let themselves be captured alive so alternatively Katya could've shot herself and Denis would then have to take the Shotgun covered in her blood from her dead body and shoot himself. In doing this he'd also have to witness the sight of her corpse or look away while reaching for the Shotgun which would surely result in him touching her blood or wound before he found the Shotgun.
