PostSubject: Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooting   Sutherland Springs - Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooting Icon_minitimeSun Nov 05, 2017 2:26 pm

At approximately 11:20 a.m. CST, Devin Patrick Kelley, exited from a vehicle at a gas station across the street from the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs wearing black tactical gear, a ballistic vest and a black facemask featuring a white skull. Wielding a Ruger AR-556 semi-automatic rifle,he immediately fired in the direction of the church. After crossing the street, he approached the building from the right while firing, and continued to fire while entering the church building with worshipers attending regular Sunday service. Inside, he yelled, "Everybody dies motherfuckers," as he proceeded up and down the aisle and shot at people in the pews.Kelley used 15 magazines, firing about 450 rifle rounds during the shooting. According to police, the shooting was captured on a camera set up at the back of the church to record regular services for uploading online.

As Kelley left the church, local resident and former firearms instructor Stephen Willeford, armed with an AR-15 pattern semi-automatic rifle, confronted him. While taking cover behind a truck, Willeford shot Kelley twice. Kelley fled in his Ford Explorer as Willeford fired several rounds through the vehicle's window. Willeford flagged down passing truck driver Johnnie Langendorff, and they pursued Kelley at high speed for about five to seven minutes. According to Langendorff, they drove at speeds up to 95 miles per hour. During the chase, Kelley called his father to tell him that he was injured and thought that he would not survive. After losing control of his vehicle, Kelley crashed in neighboring Guadalupe County, near the city of New Berlin. He was observed to be motionless by the two men in pursuit, and police took over the scene when they arrived. Police found Kelley dead in his car, with three gunshot wounds, including a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Two handguns were found in the vehicle: a Glock 9 mm and a Ruger .22-caliber, both of which Kelley had purchased.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) are assisting. Investigators said the shooting was not racially or religiously motivated, but rather by a dispute with his mother-in-law.

Devin Patrick Kelley (February 21, 1991 – November 5, 2017) was raised in New Braunfels, Texas, about 35 miles (56 km) from Sutherland Springs, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from New Braunfels High School. He served in logistics readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2009 until 2014. He married in April 2011, and soon after, he was charged with assaulting his wife and fracturing his stepson's skull. In response, Kelley made death threats against the superior officers who charged him, and he was caught sneaking firearms onto Holloman Air Force Base. He was then committed to Peak Behavioral Health Services, a mental health facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

In June 2012, Kelley escaped from Peak Behavioral Health Services. He was later apprehended at a nearby bus terminal. The facility's director of military affairs later recalled that Kelley had stayed at the facility for several weeks, until he was brought to court-martial, and while there had expressed a desire for "some kind of retribution to his chain of command" and was discovered to have used computers to order "weapons and tactical gear to a PO Box in San Antonio. Kelley and his wife divorced in October 2012.

In November 2012, Kelley was convicted by a general court-martial on two counts of Article 128 UCMJ, for the assault of his wife and stepson. He was sentenced to 12 months of confinement and a reduction in rank to the lowest grade of E-1. He appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, but was unsuccessful. In 2014, he was dismissed with a bad conduct discharge.

After his release, Kelley returned to New Braunfels, where he lived in a converted barn at his parents' home. Shortly thereafter, he was investigated for sexual assault and rape, and for a physical assault of his then-girlfriend, although these investigations did not lead to charges. On April 4, 2014, he married his then-girlfriend. The couple moved into a mobile home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was charged in August 2014 for misdemeanor cruelty to animals after beating his malnourished Husky. He was given a deferred sentence of probation and was ordered to pay restitution and other fees; the charge was dismissed in March 2016, after he completed the sentence. In January 2015, a resident of El Paso County, Colorado received a protection order against him.

Kelley's estranged second wife sometimes attended First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs with her family. Prior to the shooting, he sent threatening text messages to her mother. His wife and her mother were not at the church when the attack occurred, but his wife’s grandmother, Lula Woicinski White, was, and was killed.

According to a high school classmate, he was constantly "trying to preach his atheism" and describing people who believe in God as "stupid". Kelley attended the First Baptist Church in Kingsville, Texas from May to June 2014 and volunteered to take part in one day of Vacation Bible School. He began posting about atheism online after he stopped teaching Bible classes.

At the time of the shooting, Kelley was again living at his parents' property in New Braunfels. He was licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety as a security guard, and was a security worker at the Summit Vacation and RV Resort in New Braunfels. He had previously worked as an unarmed security guard at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort in New Braunfels, but was fired after less than six weeks on the job

Could be another ideologically motivated attack, like the one committed a week before the Vegas shooting.

Nashville shooting had a heavy ideological motive: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It's uncertain for this Texas shooting, though there could be a certain background because the perpetrator aimed for a church.

You do realize mass shooters mostly get their guns illegally, right? If you take firearms away from law abiding citizens, they wouldn't be able to defend themselves, meanwhile the criminals would still get their hands on anything they want.

Actually, a lot of them actually get their guns legally or in the case of younger people, get them from parents who obtained them legally.

Do you really think that gun control will help the situation? It's like drug control, you don't see people buying illegal drugs on Walmart do you?Yet people get them anyway and it's the same with guns.Gun control only stops law abiding citizens from getting guns so they can protect themselves

No they don't

Stephen Paddock, Legal.
Omar Mateen, Legal.
Cho Seung Hui, Legal.
E&D, Legally procured guns, given to another person illegaly, the guns were still legal.

You are incorrect, factually.

As for the 'only the criminals will get guns.'
POLICE!

Even if the criminals and citizens had guns, Criminals have the first and last shot, you lose, you die, no winning.

Even if they only got guns, let's have a look at countries with different gun control laws, and compare them to the USA shall we?

Murder with firearms per millions.
UK: 0.236 (6.6 guns for each 100 ppl Few guns allowed deadlier guns BANNED)
Ukraine: 3.59 (6.6 Few guns allowed Deadlier guns banned)
Netherlands: 0.58 (3.9 Few guns allowed Deadlier guns banned.)
Finland: 3.25 (27.5 Many guns allowed, MANY background checks to acquire one, deadlier guns banned.)
USA: 10.54 (88.8 Many guns allowed, few background checks, only automatics banned. Easy to get legally acquired guns into the hands of the illegal. Mentally ill people can buy guns.)

So, you're saying firearms are worthless and we're still going to die even if we have the ability to defend ourselves? The police cannot help you, they only come to clean up the scene after the crime is already executed. As for the statistic, you're forgetting the fact that US is the third most populated country in the world. Although I am for the tighter background checks, your statement to take the guns entirely is flawed.

If you ban semi-automatic rifles, they will resort to handguns, if you ban handguns, they will resort to knives, if you ban knives, they will resort to cars, if you ban cars...? You see, the point is not to remove rights of the people, why are you getting so emotional over this?

Yea, i suppose.
I just can't see how this shooting will be any different from the others.

People die, nothing changes, the end.
Although I feel like I might have posted some things in the last few mins in an anger that I would rather I didn't post, but there's no point in deleting them now. I am such an idiot.

What have they done to their citizens?

If you ban semi-automatic rifles, they will resort to handguns, if you ban handguns, they will resort to knives, if you ban knives, they will resort to cars, if you ban cars...? You see, the point is not to remove rights of the people, why are you getting so emotional over this?

Because people dying is not good. Very simple.

That does not give you a reason to go on an unreasonable rant and incite more violence by "Grabbing a nearest rope/knife/truck".

Three of the US's worst mass shootings have happened in the past two years. I wonder if this is a sign of a greater trend or if this is simply an anomaly.

im going with greater trend. Only 2 shootings have gotten past 20 kills in the whole 20th century. But now we have vtech, sandy hook, vegas, pulse, this, i guess aurora was also very bad.

the 20th century had Edmond post office, texas, mcdonalds, lubys, columbine, and maybe one or to more shootings that i forgot. But it seems shootings are getting worse and more common
