The Columbine families (and other school shooting victims) would be going through hell hearing about this shooting.

There is a video on youtube where the shooter laid down and the first officers came to arrest him.

Video is pretty bad quality tho.

This happened about 45 miles from where I live. I've never been to the school and I don't know anyone who lives in the area ... but it's still freaky.

hello everyone. Sorry we had to meet again under these circumstances.

I was having a spirited debate about gun control with some people, I think if we keep looking at just that, we are missing the bigger picture.

I was speaking with my mom today and she said she really thinks there needs to be metal detectors and more security, she said when I was in HS we didn't need it, until Columbine then everything changed. We actually almost had a talk about it, which we never did.

I agree that schools should have metal detectors. I also think what might be helpful is that once they are triggered, they set off a silent alarm in all of the classrooms in the school to let teachers know to go into lockdown until further notice. The system should also alert from which entrance in the building the alarm went off at and have a group of 5 or so trained resource officers on campus go to check out what the issue is. I think that having some kind of "automatic lockdown" button in the main office in case of an emergency where they're not able to deliver news quick enough to teachers and students that there's an active shooter on campus could be helpful, although could be abused by a shooter as a way to delay police entry if he somehow uses the button to lock himself in a class full of kids.

I don't know that gun control is the answer, because people will always find a way to access guns no matter what. We also can't do anything about the millions of guns that are already in existence, and the 3D printers and dark web markets people will use to obtain guns. It may lessen the likelihood of a minor obtaining a weapon, but it's not like an arms dealer on the dark web or your 3D printer need ID to prove that you're old enough to own a weapon. I think that psychological tests prior to obtaining a gun are also necessary. I believe that if you show signs of any severe mental disorder in which you're a threat to yourself or others (depression, schizophrenia, sociopathy, bipolar, etc.) you should not be able to own a weapon of any kind, unless you are given a pass by multiple different mental health professionals that deem you not a threat to yourself or other members of society. It might be seen as discriminatory, but I think that most people will agree that the main leading cause of these mass shootings, as well as suicide, stem from severe, unresolved mental disorders.

The same goes for people who have a criminal record. If you have ever been arrested for anything more than a misdemeanor, you should not be allowed to own a weapon. It doesn't matter how long ago it was, or how much you've changed, I believe that once you commit a crime severe enough to land you in jail or prison, you give up your right to legally own a firearm. I won't name any names, but I know someone who was charged several times in the past for assault, drinking under the influence, and sleeping with a minor, and yet they were still somehow allowed to not only purchase and own a weapon, but have a license to carry in public. Unsurprisingly, this is the type of person I'd expect to go on a mass shooting spree had the circumstances been right for them.

All in all, I think the best way to prevent more school shootings from happening in the future, or at the very least lessening the effect they have, is by stronger school security, and keeping weapons out of the hands of criminals and the severely mentally ill.

A 19 year old former student, Nick Cruz, attacked his former high school in Parkland, Florida. He was dressed in a maroon shirt, dark pants, combat boots, and a gas mask. He was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and smoke bombs. He apparently activated a fire alarm and shot at evacuating students, before continuing inside the school to shoot more people. 17 are confirmed dead and around 14 wounded. Also yes, there are several videos, most released on twitter I believe.

The safest option would be to have an Australian style gun control law, but that will never happen in the USA.

Gard told CNN that he taught Cruz for a semester in 2016 and described him as a "quiet kid" who he "never had any problems with." But the teacher recalled female students in his class said Cruz had "problems with other girls."

Cruz's former classmates described him as a "loner" who was obsessed with weapons and "into weird stuff.

"He was off," Watford said. "He was super stressed-out all the time and talked about guns a lot and tried to hide his face." Watford added that Cruz complained often about bullying on campus and "had beef with one kid."

After their mother died, the brothers were left in the care of a family friend in Palm Beach County, Kumbatovich told the Sentinel. However, Cruz was unhappy living there and asked a former school friend from Stoneman Douglas if he could stay with their family, Jim Lewis, an attorney representing that family, told the Sentinel.

I think it's so strange that many people knew he was odd and "disturbed", he was very into guns and dark stuff, and he actually had a guns, and no one cared about it at all.

To be honest, no one takes that seriously, how many times have we heard in the news after the tragedy, when people who knew the person told that ''he had guns and he was joking about it before'' it's freaking unbelievable.

It's disgusting, I remember when I was in high school I had a classmate who was bullied a lot... he was alone and had almost no friends in the class, his younger brother was always around him when there was a break and he was not from the city, but from the farm... so one day like a ticking time bomb he snapped pretty bad, I thought something bad will happen. Thank God here in my country there are no guns and absolutely zero chance to get guns here... because I had a feeling he was able to do something bad at that time. I was worried about him, haven't heard about him since my last year of high school which was 4 years ago.

People need to realize that if they know someone who posts bad stuff on the social network or even threatens to do something to others whether it is school, the local community etc, they have to take it seriously... one phone call to right people can save and change thousands of people lives...

In my country we also have very strict gun law, so no one shoot anybody. About the bulling, well this is just a part of school life, unfortunately, many kids went thru this (me also), but only few can harm someone and it's just because they capable.
