Did they ever realize how fortunate they were?

Eric and Dylans families weren't rich by any means, but from what I could tell both of the kids had parents who looked like they didn't have to struggle. Dyla n's house was nicer than Eric's, but his home was nice being it was in a subdivison. I think a lot of kids today would've resented both of them just for having nicer material things. Granted, I don't know if Eric and Dylan were spoiled or not, but they definitely weren't mistreated.

Also to answer the question, both families would have been considered middle to upper class. Dylan actually talked about this very thing in his journal. He said that he knew he had a nice house, had a few good friends, a good family, etc. But he still felt the same way.  

Eric talked about how great his mom and dad were as well. Yet both still decided to plan and follow through with the attack. I think both E&D were well aware that they had a decent life, but it just didn't seem to matter much to them in the scope of their thinking and feelings.

Well, I know Eric felt down, because he was rejected from the military, but would it cause him to go on a murder spree? I don't think so. I just wish they would release the basement tapes.

I thought Eric hadn't known he was rejected by the time Columbine happened?

According to the Marine recruiter, Eric was rejected just a few days (I think the Thursday before?) the shooting. They planned NBK for almost a year. He really only met with the recruiter to make his parents think he was planning for his future; his rejection had nothing to do with the massacre.
