Obscure incident with uncanny similarities to the Jonestown massacre recently added to the list of rampage killers.
On September 9, 1985 in Sinasa the religious leader Datu Mangayanon had hacked a tree and promised the tribesmen that its leaves, when dry, would turn into money. When failing to grow money on the trees, he led a total of 67 people to eat poison-laced gruel, telling them: ″Go to sleep. ... When you awake, ... you will be gods.″ All 67 died, but only five survived by pretending to eat the poison-laced gruel.
Datu Mangayanon then hacked to death his wife and two sons, aged 2 and 4, when they refused the food, and then killed himself.
