| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and anyone else who might be interested- I passed along the suggestion of a searchable 11k to the author I follow on Facebook. Apparently she'd been doing some work with that at one point but due to the enormous size of the 11k and limitations on uploading huge files, she'd only been able to break it up into 500 page chunks and wasn't sure if it'd be useful to anyone that way so progess stalled. On her website, the first 500 pages are posted in a downloadable Word file and she invited me to look at it and give her feedback. I generally use a tablet and it downloaded quickly for me. Not sure how it'd be if people primarily use their smartphone or if they don't have access to Microsoft Word. I think the major limitation is that since it's only 500 pages at a time, you still have to have an idea of what you're looking for in order to know where to look, or it could take you a long time to find anything. But I think it's better than anything I've come across yet so I told her I hope she does more. If you want to try it, it's at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] There's a disclaimer of sorts on this page and for the Word document you need to hover over the Columbine Evidence Locker for a dropdown menu. | |

| That's great and very much appreciated. Quick question though, is what is on acolumbinesite.com the same thing? On that site it's broken down into 100 page sections and though it isn't searchable, it is the easiest way to find what you're looking for. _________________ I don't trust joggers, they're the ones always finding the bodies.

| That is great. For me paired with the Evanlong breakdown I should be able to find whatever I need! I hope she keeps up this project. I know many many researchers and fans alike would love to be able to use a keyword search [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - yes it is the same document but let's say you want to see testimony of a certain student. You have no idea where that student was that day... how do you possibly find them? Go thru each and every 100 page grouping to find them? This would make it so much easier to find specific facts that people want to know _________________ Hold me now I need to feel complete Like I matter to the one I need

True! The 11K is a beast to look through, and very time consuming. I'm up for anything to make it easier to find a certain thing quickly. |

Yes, as [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] mentioned acolumbinesite.com has the PDFs of the 11k but there's no index as to what each 100 page section contains. On the author site, next to the Word file, she's gotten it somewhat broken down as to what's in that section: - Quote :
- Library Injured (p. 1- p. 179), Other Injured (p. 180- p. 265), Library Witnesses (p. 266- p. 500)
Statements by: Doyle, Kyler, Jankowski, Eubanks, Ireland, Kintgen, Kreutz, Nielson, Nowlen, Park, Ruegsegger, Schnurr, Steepleton, Todd, Anderson, Castaldo, Foss, Graves, Hochhalter, Johnson, Kirklin, Munson, Simmons, Taylor, Ball, Barrett, Blair, Bollerud, Cohn, Dodd, Elmore, Fair, Greenwood, Holliday, Houy, Huntington, Jacobson, Johnson, Phye, Cline, Kean, Kirkland, Lagos, Lapp, Long So this way if you don't know exactly what you need you can at least say, for example, I know it's a library witness so I need to focus on these particular sections. Not a perfect system but should cut down on trying to hunt stuff down if she keeps up with it.

| That would work a lot better! Many thanks to thelmar for suggesting it to the author and to the author for starting this painstaking process _________________ I don't trust joggers, they're the ones always finding the bodies.

I've passed along everyone's enthusiasm about this; keeping my fingers crossed that it's enough motivation for her to keep working on it!

| Interesting Facebook post by this author today on her work on the 11k project. From the sound of things, this is going to take her an incredibly long time. I mean, I think what she is attempting is amazing and will be super helpful but with the amount of extra work she's doing it's going to be hard for her to not get frustrated and stall the project. If she does manage to get it all finished, it's going to be one of the best resources we could have on Columbine.
As you know, I'm in the process of converting all police and associated Columbine documents into searchable Word files to make navigating the evidence easier for researchers. A pet peeve of mine with regard to the police documents is the number of times that the names of victims, witnesses, and even the shooters are written incorrectly. I realized that it would be pointless to to leave those mistakes in the 11k because if a researcher was looking for a specific name and it was spelled incorrectly in the documents, they'd have trouble finding it (ex. victim Valeen Schnurr's name is misspelled 36 times in HER witness statement!). So, in addition to converting the documents from PDF to Word, I am also checking each and every name against Columbine yearbooks, news reports, Internet searches, etc. to ensure proper spelling. For example, if person "X" mentions they were sitting with "Y" in the cafeteria I confirm the spelling of "Y's" name via one or more of these sources, then I look for "Y's" statement in the police documents to ensure that their version of events is consistent with "X's". This means that sometimes I am CHANGING spelling or a FIRST or LAST NAME within the police documents. I will ONLY do this if I am certain that I have correctly identified the person referred to; if I have any doubts I begrudgingly leave it as it is.
She also links to a blog post complaining about Jeffco's handling of all the messed up names, which is funny but sad at the same time.

I think she is for sure making the right call on changing the spellings bc Jeffco sucks but man it is a ton of work! _________________ Hold me now I need to feel complete Like I matter to the one I need

I think her main objective is to fix Jeffco's mistakes with names and things so that statements aren't overlooked because a misspelling prevents it from showing up in the search. It looks like she's also typing out the handwritten statements so some of the real chickenscratch ones that aren't readable by the software can also be searched.
