It was actually Nancy Lanza's sister-in-law, Marsha Lanza, who started it. She made some comments in an interview (see linked video) and the media just ran with it. The whole thing is questionable at best.

Dr. Todd Grande explains pretty much what I think about this.
The thing with personality disorders is that the person can be highly functional. They have obsessions and fears. Nonetheless they are also able to work, go to school or be a mother such as Nancy. Depending on how functional they are they can spend a lifetime being unnoticed and even borderline can present itself this way. In the same way a psychopath could be your unsuspected coworker or neighbor, the same could be said from all other personality disorders.
Off course this is speculation. Nancy is dead and any diagnose now won't change what has already happened.
