Looking back now, we all know that there were a lot of warning signs. In addition to Harris’s conflicts with the brown family and the boys’ arrest for the van break in , they both dropped other hints in the year before the massacre.
Some where big, some more subtle, but none raised enough of an alarm to alter the course of events.
After the assault, many came forward to tell police that they had heard both Harris and Klebold make reference to killing people and bombing the school.
Close friends, acquaintances, and people they barely knew all told police variations of the same theme. 18 individuals reported similar threats by Harris and Klebold:
“Eric always said that he was going to blow up his school and make kids sorry.”
Harris also wrote in someone’s yearbook: “Natural selection needs a boost, like me with a shotgun”
“Another student Stated he did remember Eric Harris asking him at one time to buy him a 44 mag pistol sometime in 1998”
Harris had “talked about blowing up the King Sooper’s store and had a thing about talking about guns”
Another boy said that Harris had joked about blowing up the school, but the boy stated that he did not take him serious. The same boy also said that Harris and Klebold talked about how it would be fun as a senior prank to ride through the school on a dirtbike with guns and shoot it up.
A friend told police that he had knowledge of Harris and Klebold making pipe bombs, was aware that Klebold had bought a shotgun, and that Eric Harris had come to him and expressed an interest in making napalm. (edited)
Sometimes they would get together with the group and talk about tactically how to blow up a room. They did it more in a jokingly manner which is why a lot of people didn’t take them seriously. They even talked about how you would go about killing someone if you wanted.
There are so many people that mention that these boys actually spoke about bombing the school and killing people but nobody took them seriously unfortunately. I actually have so many examples that it’s almost laughable.
Perhaps, and just as alarming, this kind of talk was so common amongst their peer group that it did not rouse any suspicion. (edited)
In addition to alluding to their plans in conversations with others both Eric and Dylan revealed some of their thoughts through their class assignments
