Personally, I think it's a pretty benign thing. The word "Philistine" has two contexts, a historical/Biblical one, and as a pejorative to describe someone who's uncultured or hostile to the arts. "Cultural Philistine" is a reference to the latter most likely. So, I think the description is maybe a joke or play on words, unexpectedly associating himself with the Biblical nation rather than the colloquial usage of the word. The Philistines in the Bible could definitely be described as Iron Age goyim as they were opposed to the Israelites, hell, even the famous giant Goliath was a Philistine.
