The start of the Columbine attack was mistaken as a prank.
People though the Colorado movie rampage was just special effects.
Somebody thought Derrick Bird's .22 rifle was a comedy prop.
People though the sound of gunfire at Port Arthur was an historic re-enactment.

The San Ysidro McDonald's massacre was initially dismissed as a prank since James Huberty's shotgun failed to fire at the first person he aimed at.

At Red Lake a witness said they thought someone was letting off fireworks and that they'd get in a lot of trouble.

I think I remember reading somewhere that someone also saw Jeff with the shotgun and mistook it for a BB gun before he shot someone else.

If you look at any shooting you'll find a witness who thought the gunshots were fireworks and that someone was playing a prank. It's probably because the human brain has trouble accepting that the person is in a dangerous situation given the unlikeliness of an actual shooting happening. Fail thread.
