What were the "tests"Eric was talking about?

They discuss credit card fraud; Eric raises his hand like he's admitting to having done it. Then they talk about "tests", saying: "We wouldn't be where we are without them." They talk about gas and oil and how it will be "one hell of a mental picture".

It must've been the bombs and crickets they were testing, with the mentioning of gas and oil and their frequent testing of the batches. Although I agree, "We wouldn't be where we are without them" is a bit odd, maybe they meant preparation wise? Destruction wise?

I think he might be saying that they both learned a lot by testing their explosives. Not enough for something as ambitious as propane bombs thankfully.

I thought they were talking about actual tests that they took in high school? Like a math test? Maybe I'm thinking of something else but I know there was some kind of reference to school tests in the basement tapes.

They could also be referring to the "missions" they went on in the years prior.
