Permanently is doubtful, but managing to escape for a little while I can certainly see. The police did say he had made a plan to escape, so it might be possible he wanted to flee long enough to cause another shooting somewhere else. That would be a scary thought - a serial mass murderer. I bet a plot like that will get used for some trashy crime TV show like Criminal Minds.
