Students of grade 8 “A” came to the office on the third floor for a biology lesson taught by 26-year-old Ofelya Mkrtchyan.
One of the schoolgirls, Alina Afanaskina, came to class with a tube containing a 16-gauge Bekas-3 shotgun.
According to Russian media TASS, the schoolgirl entered the classroom and almost immediately began shooting.
- This all happened on the third floor. The girl came with a gun to where Ophelia Edwardovna’s class is located, near the paramedic’s office.
Alina killed a classmate and wounded several boys.
The teacher tried to protect other children by covering them, a gymnasium student told MSK1 RU.
09:15. The city dispatch service received information about an emergency at the school, the Bryansk mayor's office reported.
09:22. The police and the Russian National Guard arrived at the gymnasium. There was no signal from the panic button, as the Russian media SHOT writes.
When the shooting started, not all schoolchildren understood what had happened. Some mistook the sound of gunfire for a ball hitting the wall because there was a class going on in the gym.
“We heard some sounds, pops, and thought it was a ball hitting the wall; we thought it was physical education. But the teacher went out into the corridor and said:
“No, this is something scary,” RIA Novosti quotes one of the school students.
At this time, other schoolchildren and teachers were hiding in their classrooms.

correspondents that a girl ran in and warned them about what was happening, after which the students were locked in the locker rooms.
09:46. Local telegram channels began to publish the first images from the scene.
09:52. TASS reported that an eighth-grader started shooting at a Bryansk gymnasium, and police officers and emergency services are working at the scene.
10:06. The city mayor's office said that school students have already been evacuated and sent home. The building was cordoned off by the police.
10:10. The city administration shared the first official data on the victims: two schoolgirls were killed, including the shooter herself, and four more were wounded. This message was later deleted.
10:16. The girl who opened fire at the gymnasium has been identified. She turned out to be 14-year-old Alina Afanaskina. She killed her classmate, 13-year-old Marina N., and also wounded four boys. After which she committed suicide, the Russian media Baza reported.
10:18. Health Minister Mikhail Murashko took personal control of the provision of medical care to victims of the shooting in Bryansk, the department reported.
10:42. The Bryansk Ministry of Internal Affairs denied the number of victims of the shooting; their number increased to five.
10:47. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Murder”. At this moment, investigators and criminologists were working at the scene, establishing the motives for the crime and all the circumstances.
11:13. The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation sent an operational group to Bryansk, which, together with local services, will work in the city. The department also said that in connection with the emergency, schoolchildren, teachers and parents will be provided with psychological assistance.
11:18. Dmitry, the girl’s father, who owned the gun, was detained. According to SHOT, the 53-year-old man was taken in for questioning. Security forces are investigating how his daughter gained access to the weapon. According to one version, the schoolgirl could take advantage of the fact that the day before was her father’s birthday.
11:26. The Bryansk region prosecutor's office promised to check how security was ensured in gymnasium No. 5. As TASS reported, citing operational services, the metal detector frame was not working in the educational institution.
11:49. The Commissioner for Children's Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, Maria Lvova-Belova, published a video message on her Telegram channel, in which she stated that she had taken the situation with the children injured in the shooting under personal control.
11:56. The police interviewed the twin sister of the attacker, who may have known about the impending attack. As the girls' classmates told SHOT, they were both "very strange and unsociable." At the same time, the relatives got along with each other.
13:02. The assistant to the head of the Ministry of Health told RIA Novosti that the lives of the teenagers injured in the incident are not in danger, they are receiving the necessary treatment.
