A piece of that essay says,

Of course they wanted power. No human being on the planet wants to feel vulnerable.

As for the "who were they trying to convince?" part... This is the same as when people say "why do you care what other people think of you?" People need feedback from others. If the feedback you're getting from others is telling you that you're weak, unwanted, and a vulnerable target, then you're going to have to find a way to fix that problem.
