Florida police respond to suspected active shooter

Police in Panama City, Florida, said on Tuesday they were responding to a suspected active shooter in an apartment complex.

Local media reported a large police presence at the complex. Bay County Sheriff's Office and Panama City Police Department responded to the scene, sheriff's spokeswoman Ruth Corley said in a phone interview.

Local media footage showed several officers with weapons drawn taking cover behind cars. What sounded like gunshots could be heard as a local television reporter conducted a live interview with a witness who said he had heard gunfire.

Panama City is located on Florida's panhandle about 80 miles (129 km) west of Tallahassee.

Authorities were responding Tuesday to reports of an active shooter in Panama City, Florida.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office tweeted that they were assisting the Bay County Sheriff's Office with "an ongoing incident" there. They also confirmed that the incident was connected to a suspicious death that occurred earlier Tuesday morning in Walton County.

Witnesses said they heard between 50 and 100 gunshots, the local NBC affiliate WJHG reported.

At least one person received a minor injury and was taken to a hospital, city spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence told CNN.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott tweeted that he'd spoken with the Bay County sheriff and offered any state law-enforcement support necessary.

Local television footage and photos posted to social media showed a massive law-enforcement response to the incident, including dozens of police cruisers and helicopters. Two local schools were placed on lockdown.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- Multiple law enforcement agencies have surrounded a Panama City, Florida, apartment building where a shooter is barricaded inside.

City spokeswoman Caitlyn Lawrence says it's still an active situation. The suspect has been firing on law enforcement. One civilian received minor injuries in Tuesday's shooting.  

Bay County Sheriff's Office chief investigator Jimmy Stanford tells CBS affiliate WECP the suspect is believed to be the same person sought in a suspicious death at a home in Santa Rosa Beach.

Witnesses told the station they heard more than 50 gunshots in the area. A grocery store and nearby schools were evacuated.

The Panama City News Herald initially reported that a suspect barricaded himself inside a bank. A bomb squad vehicle was seen in the bank parking lot. But Lawrence said the bank is near the apartment building and it appears the suspect is confined to the apartment building.

A man firing a gun who barricaded himself inside a Panama City, Florida, apartment complex on Tuesday has been killed, WMBB-TV reported on its website.

The suspect, Kevin Holroyd, 49, was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in Walton County, the Sheriff's Office in Bay County said on Facebook. Walton County is west of Bay County, which includes Panama City.

Panama City spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence confirmed that Holroyd was dead but did not give details.

The homicide victim, 30-year-old Clinton Street, died from multiple gunshot wounds before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Walton County Sheriff's spokeswoman Corey Dobridnia said in a phone interview.

The shooting death and active shooter incident were related, the Walton County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter.

Officials had been engaged in a standoff with Holroyd, who fired at authorities, Bay County Sheriff's Office said.

An emergency worker was grazed by a bullet, Bay County Sheriff's Office said. The injury was minor, Panama City spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence said in a phone interview.
