Mass Shooters who used illegal drugs recreationally

I am strictly talking about illegal drugs not anti depressive or anti anxiety medication because a whole lot of shooters were prescribed those. 

The only ones I know of is Jared Lee Loughner and Robert Hawkings, but what drugs did they use and how often? 

If you know any other shooters who used illegal drugs for recreational use, feel free to comment.

Allegedly Eric and Dylan smoked weed. Jared Lee Loughner smoked salvia I believe and Robert Hawkins smoked weed.

Patrick Purdy was also a drug addict; he took meth IIRC.

George Hennard acquired and used drugs and Devin Kelley smoked cannabis.

Pretty sure Dylann Roof was a drug user.
Rampage killer Maksim Gelman dealt drugs a bit and took PCP, and probably other drugs.
He isn't a mass shooter, but Dale Cregan also was a drug dealer and user.

Yeah, the Charlston chimp choking champion used Xanax, I think he smoked as well but I am not sure anymore.

Not a mass shooter but Ted Bundy smoked cannabis frequently, even while in jail allegedly (his own claim).

Stephen Lawrence Anderson who perpetrated the Raurimu massacre was described as a 'cannabis-using schizophrenic' and cannabis was directly blamed for his massacre... He was eventually released but then remanded back to hospitalization for using synthetic cannabis in 2014..

Ronald DeFeo allegedly had a big drug problem although I can't remember the exact drug, perhaps mescaline? That doesn't sound right though. I might have read that his sister Dawn used mescaline or something like that?

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Also not a mass shooter, but Timothy McVeigh did meth. And Omar Mateen was on steroids.

Someone trolled a news network saying that The Supreme Gentleman (can't remember his name) was a creatine addict.

Obviously not true.

Khalid Masood was also on steroids, Raoul Moat took steroids but I'm not sure if he was on them during his rampage, the London Bridge attackers were also on steroids during the attack (though the level was apparently not that high). Anders Breivik also took steroids and was on an ECA stack during his attack.

I consider alcohol a drug, just cause its legal means nothing. Andrew Blaze was a very wild drunk like when he laughed at "bowl of dicks" for near 5 minutes. I think James Holmes admitted to taking 100mg of Vicodin before the Aurora massacre idk if he was a regular user though. Dylan Roof suboxone? I think and it's suppose to be to get people off heroin but can get non addicts high like methadone.

I heard that following the mass shooting in Danforth, Toronto, police found what appeared to be cocaine under Faisal Hussain's bed.

Nikolas Cruz used marijuana and Xanax illegally, but I'm not sure if it was recreational or for his mental issues.

Ira Theadore Attebery was found with traces of PCP on his blood.

I think Jeff Weise enjoyed Marijuana, as in his online profiles he calls himself a stoner.

Faisal Hussein reported to his psychiatrist(s) that he abused marijuana and alcohol in his younger years but that he quit smoking marijuana after a bad reaction. He was prescribed hydrocodone in 2012 by multiple doctors and reported that he was addicted to it but later in 2014 he reported that he was no longer addicted.


After the shooting, the police found multiple packages containing drugs in his room. These drugs were heroin, MDMA and Phenacetin. A fingerprint matching Faisal was found on the packaging. The police reported in their official report on the incident that "the quantity and packaging the drugs were located in suggest the drugs were not for personal use." So it's likely he didn't use them but rather sold them or supplied them to dealers or a gang.

On one of his phones they found documents on various drugs and on another phone they found a message in which the sender messaged a third party in February 2015 about buying or selling kush.

Kimveer Gill liked drinking Whiskey.

TJ Lane smoked weed and took Dilantin, an anti-seizure medication he wasn't prescribed while in prison.

James Gamble and Randall Shepherd, two of the Halifax mall shooting plotters, used marijuana recreationally together.

I cannot attest to it's accuracy, but if this post is to believed, Brandon Scott Hole used weed, LSD, magic mushrooms, xanax, alcohol, and glue.

Andy william smoked weed and take painkillers (I don't know if for medical or illegal purposes, it is only mentioned)

Jacob Tyler Roberts smoked marijuana prior to the shooting at Clackamas Town Center and had a "low level of residual cocaine," indicating use of the drug 36-48 hours prior. It's not mentioned on his toxicology report, but he also drank with friends prior.

Alfred Ogwang (Kamwenge Trade Center shooting; 13 killed, 14 wounded) claimed to have been drunk at the time of the shooting.

Richard Komacech (Kampala wedding shooting; 26 killed, 13 wounded) was drunk at the time of the shooting.

Dominick Maldonado (Tacoma Mall shooting, 2005) used methamphetamine and didn't sleep for almost a week before his mall shooting.
Karl Pierson used alcohol and marijuana.
Trey Sesler used Oxycontin, Prozac, methamphetamine, marijuana, and alcohol.

Stair smoke marijuana in some course of his life.

According to people who knew him, TJ Lane smoked weed occasionally.

Just to let you know, there's another thread for shooters who were under the influence of drugs during their shootings. And alcohol is technically a legal drug, if the drinker is of a certain age.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (Boston Bomber, but whatever) used marijuana.
Mitchell Johnson used his Dad's marijuana.
Jeff Weise used marijuana.
Michael Carneal, Andrew Wurst, and Dylan Klebold used alcohol and marijuana.
Kip Kinkel used alcohol.

Patrick Purdy used “LSD and other hallucinogens, modeling glue, PCP, amphetamines, heroin, and cocaine," and was alcoholic from the age of twelve. However, he was clean and sober at the time of his attack at Cleveland Elementary School.

Bruco Eastwood was also an alcoholic, which isn't quite illegal but seems relevant.

Charles Whitman also used Dexamyl, Librium, and had "thirteen bottles of prescription drugs from seven physicians." Oddly enough, these seem less recreational and more to treat his vague self-diagnosed physical ailments and to increase his efficiency by eliminating sleep (which had the opposite effect.)

Richard Speck was a frequent user of barbiturates and was known to take any drug handed to him

Mitchell Johnson has been arrested on drug charges for possession of marijuana in the past

Eric Houston: marijuana, alcohol, and other drugs
James Rouse: MaxAlert, Tylenol PM, marijuana, and alcohol
Evan Ramsey: marijuana
Eric Hainstock: marijuana, cocaine, LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, and heroin.
Peter Odighizuwa: reported to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Ian David Long: had content about marijuana on his phone.

Jimmy Lee Dykes (2013 Alabama bunker hostage crisis) used marijuana (at least as of 2000 when he was arrested on possession charges.)

Oleg Naumov (Sakhalin Oblast, 1998) abused drugs since he was 13 and said he was high on acetone vapors during his spree.
Alexander Kuzminykh (Russian submarine Vepr K-157, 1998) "inhaled intoxicants."
Yaroslavsky shooting (Yaroslavsky, 2002) was drunk during his spree.
Dmitry Vinogradov (2012 Moscow shooting) used alcohol and went on a five-day drinking binge.
Ahmed Ibragimov (1999 Mikenskaya shootings) was allegedly drunk during his attack.
Multiple unnamed gunmen (1976 Letipea massacre) were allegedly drunk during their attack.
Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel (2016 Nice truck attack) drank alcohol and was a drug user.

Rha Sung-jong (1973 Seoul and Jeonju shooting) drank and smoked in middle school and presumably throughout his life.
Kim Kwang-suk drank whiskey before he detonated his homemade bombs.

In his Journal Randy Stair expressed an interest in doing Acid as a drug he had always wanted to do.

Robert L. Butler, Jr. used K2, a synthetic drug apparently similar to weed.

I know these aren't illegal, but they appear to have had similar effects with pushing their users toward violence:
A soviet soldier (Gera, 1952) was drunk.
Michael Tselousov drank alcohol.
Severino Gomes de Araújo was drunk during his attack.

Mamoru Kurihara (Kashiwa, 1975) sniffed glue, and did so before his attack.
Anton Lundin Pettersson (2015 Trollhättan school attack) occassionally drank, but was not an alcoholic.

Jared Lee Loughner used marijuana, salvia and hallucinogenic mushrooms. He also drank alcohol.
