This case was a big deal in Canada in the early ‘90s.
Paul Bernardo and his wife Karla Homolka kidnapped, raped, and murdered teenage girls.
One of their victims was Karla’s 15-year-old sister. Paul was disappointed that Karla wasn’t a virgin, so she offered to let him drug and rape her younger sibling. But the poor girl overdosed during the assault (in the middle of the night two days before Christmas). Amazingly, Paul and Karla were able to cover it up. The death was ruled accidental.
Prosecutors offered Homolka a sweet plea bargain in exchange for her testimony against her husband: only 12 years in prison. She accepted it amid widespread public outrage.
