Person claiming to have copies of the Basement Tapes

Hey everyone, as someone on one of Bill Ockham's Twitter posts pointed out in a comment, there is someone on YouTube claiming to have copies of the tapes. He claims his father was a criminal psychologist and that when his father passed away, he found copies of the tapes in his safe along with other unreleased content. He says he'll release all the footage if his original YouTube comment gets 1000 likes.

Now, I know it sounds crazy, and that there is 99% probability of it being bullshi*t. Which is what I thought at first, until I read the rest of his comments, which are not totally absurd. There is still this 1% of me thinking "what if?". This person actually kept his stance for two years and just started commenting again yesterday, replying the same thing, that he would release them after 1000 likes. If each of us gives him a like we could reach 1000 quickly, shall we see if this is true?

He goes by the username Peter Griffin. Judge for yourself here in the comments:

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it were true. It's a pretty crazy thing to lie about just for internet points (but it happens). He said he is scared to release them because of legal action, which I perfectly understand, but that guy would become a saint to the true crime community. I'm sure there are a couple others out there that remain professional and don't want to release them for the same reasons.

True, good point. But then again if it is true, it's so weird. Why risk legal action just for likes? Why would he care so much about them? And why specifically 1000?

Hope we can at least reach the 1000 to see what happens, together we could easily reach the count.

Have they provided proof of their father's occupation or is it just hot air? They have to offer something more substantiated than their word if we are going to believe what they're saying is true.

Shouldn't just believe everything Jeffco says. It is well known that Jeffco has lied numerous times and tried to cover their asses about the case throughout the years. They obviously have lots more content that is hidden from the public for fear of lawsuits. When they announced that they "destroyed" the tapes, it sounded like they were just tired of getting requests about the tapes and said it so that people would stop inquiring about them. Also, even if they really were destroyed, digitized copies definitely exist, especially for a case of this magitude. Is has been explained why and it is not hard to find proof suggesting that the FBI and the courts have copies.

Anyway, back to the YouTube comment, he does not seem like he's lying if you look at all his comments. A big part of me still thinks it's bullshit, but, we NEVER know

One random guy is all it takes. Many unreleased footage from previous cases were leaked because someone stumbled across copies. I'd actually believe that over the most corrupt PD, and who knows, he may not be so random.

I agree, just release it if you have it. That's what everyone on YouTube is telling him (go read the comments, it makes this whole thing seem less stupid haha). I know the "likes" things is stupid, but people sometimes are just dumb, or don't make sense. I don't think it's just as simple as "release it or I don't believe you". Like someone said earlier, I'm sure there are a few people that have access to copies but won't release because they are afraid of repercussions. Also, I don't think someone's username makes anything less possible. Just saying, we never know.

So picture this scenario.

I have the Basement Tapes and I wanna share them but I'm scared to because I don't want to get in trouble with law enforcement or have the FBI looking into me or whatever. Alright, fine, that's understandable. So how is going onto YouTube and saying "look I have these videos, I'm scared to release them because I don't wanna get in trouble, but if I get 1000 likes I'll release them" going to make me any less scared to release them or any less likely to get in trouble for releasing them? It doesn't make any sense.

People are gonna think I'm nuts or a troll. Understandably.

So I still think if you have them and wanna talk about how you have them, release them.
If you're not gonna release them then don't make posts about how you have them because it's pointless, a waste of everyone's time and no one is really gonna believe you without proof anyway.

using likes as a way to release material is honestly stupid, especially if you are scared of releasing them. likes on youtube mean nothing in the real world, whereas if this guy were to release the tapes and get in trouble, then yeah, that means something in the real world. also isn't the orginal comment from 'Peter Griffin' two years old now? I agree with most of the other people on this thread that this is just a way to get dumb youtube likes.

It's 99.99% fake. However, crazier things have happened. For example, after Marvin Heemeyer went on his rampage in 2004, i.e. "Killdozer", the Grand County Sheriff's Office took possession of his audio tapes/manifesto. The Killdozer tapes were tightly sealed by the Grand County Sheriff's Office. However, on March 31, 2018, an anonymous YouTube user "Luke M" released the tapes in full on YouTube. The rest is history and the tapes are everywhere.

This reminds me of a guy on a comment section from a Randy Stair video. He claims to have seen Stair’s live-streamed suicide, on a class or something like that. It sounds fake as all hell… but you never know.

Hypothetical question/scenario here...

JSCO apparently has the option to release the tapes (video and audio) at any time. I know one report says Ted Mink was given the option to release them in 2006, but declined with his "copycat" excuse.

He then authorized the tapes to be destroyed in 2011, which some people believe happened and some people don't.

Well...Ted Mink isn't the sheriff anymore - Jeff Shrader is...and maybe he feels differently about the evidence...has anyone filed a FOIA request recently?

Exactly, he's kept his stance for two years, why would somebody keep this up for that long. Still hasn't gotten the likes, and he's been commenting again since this week. Probably fake but then again, who knows.
