Subject: A.I. Upscaled Columbine Videos ( + MEGA link) Thu Dec 31, 2020 1:41 pm
In the previous weeks I upscaled a lot of Columbine related videos. Originally I only had the upscale of Rampart Range in my mind, but after the Discord server group and Bill Ockham's encourangement, I decided to upscale many more.
I would like to warn everyone that not all of the videos have a "perfect look", because I had to work with all kinds of source files. If I find a better quality source file, I will update the already existing upscale with a new one. Tools used:
Dain 0.43 - An A.I., which doubles the FPS number of the video Topaz Video Enhance A.I. - As it's name says, it upscales the video into a higher resolution
You can download the upscales here (Warning! Some of them are in X265 MP4 format instead of x264.) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The problem with these videos is that they were first made digital without any kind of time base correction or line sync. I suspect whomever first did so, used a dongle running straight from a low quality VHS player to their PC. The whole image is compromised in many of those videos - the waviness one sees on straight lines permeates throughout a frame and can't be fixed with software. It isn't the source file which is a problem, but the capture.
As such, some of the mushy looking shots, get rendered even mushier in an AI upscaler. The way it has handled faces in some of those shots is awful.
I'm noticing as more people use this software it's perceived as some kind of restoration tool. It isn't. It can be useful for denoising clips, but lets not be fooled we are seeing anything better here. Someone needs to scan the videos in from their master tapes, but do it properly, correcting errors and saving in a lossless format.

Good job on making the videos look better.
Check out my Master Archive for Originals and more videos if you want.
Sorry for writing this here, but I cannot send a PM for you. "^^
I just noticed that the UNCUT version of Zero Hour - Massacre at Columbine High got removed from Youtube (the offical one). I still have it and if you want, I can put it up to MEGA, so you can add it to the archive

Good work, upscaling is pretty hit or miss because it guesses what it "thinks" should be there, what blew my mind was the gas station CCTV footage and the black jack's video
