I think it’s a mixture of both. His videos, he wanted to to seem dark and evil but even then if you look at his body building forum posts he had a big ego.

I think that he was trying to impress or intimidate people by seeming like a 'bad boy' which led to a possibly exaggerated persona. However, he also could have been trying to put on an act for women because he thought that they liked 'bad boys' and more macho men so he made a persona that he thought women would gravitate more to.
