During the night of March 28, 1986 a Chinese man supposedly entered a police dormitory where officers and their families lived in Hulan District and stabbed people in their sleep. He supposedly killed 52 of them. After painting the sign 呼兰大侠 (Hulan Heroes or Hulan Knight) on a wall, the mysterious man escaped.
Later, he supposedly began shooting police officers, approaching them from behind during the night, killing them by shooting them in the back of the head. He was supposed to have killed more than 100 police officers that way, and was never arrested. Sources: 呼兰大侠
There was some discussion in the Chinese internet concerning the veracity of this story. Some claim further information was blocked by the Chinese police, and the story of he killing people in their sleep with a knife without anyone noticing make it hard to believe. Could he had been a serial killer? A search of Google books shows a number of results, with the earliest being from 1989. Some Chinese internet users claim it was a real story.
What's your opinion at it? Hoax? Real story?
