According to this article, he was a socially reclusive felon (weapons charges), and he had kind of gone off the rails after his mother died. Maybe it's too soon for me to speculate, but I bet he was depressed and just wanted to cause some chaos before killing himself out of some self-destructive urge. There's been an epidemic of isolation and mental illness in this country for generations, so I think we're going to be seeing more stuff like this regardless of age in the future.
