From Eric's earliest description of the attack "NBK.doc", apparently found on his computer (hence the file extension, and so considered part of the journals, or more accurately writings):
"It's gonna be like the LA Riots, the Oklahoma bombing, WW2, Vietnam, Duke and Doom all mixed together."
These choices seem quite specific and an insight into the initial plan.
Note, for example, the North Hollywood Shootout is left out. That doesn't include fire - all the above do.
It also seems notable that 6 things are chosen when they are 2 perps. 3 for each?
Many have speculated about Oklahoma bombing influence, and it held the worst body count of a terrorist attack at the time, which they sought to beat. But the rest seems kind of an afterthought to a beginning researcher. Of course, all of these have a body count.
It seems to me each may refer to a weapon
1) LA Riots - fires, or dead cops 2) Oklahoma bombing - the cars 3) WW2 - the knives 4) Vietnam - the napalm. 5) Duke Nukem 3D - the pipe bombs and propane bombs 6) DOOM - the guns
That all the guns were from DOOM and the bombs out of Duke seem apparent enough, and so makes me look at the other four.
Eric left "Apocalypse Now" in his VCR. and KMFDM's song Son of a Gun also says "Apocalypse Now". A film known for the quote about loving the smell of napalm in the morning. They tried to make napalm and a napalm launcher, like the video game Blood, and seemed to have instead opted for the molotov cocktails of gas and oil. Another possibility is the helicopters. "It looks like Apocalypse Now" it was said during the OJ 'chase' from all the helicopters. But I doubt that was meant.
WW2 might have been the strangest one at first blush. What was gonna be peculiarly "world war 2" about it other than a bunch of dead people. That it happened on 4/20? It seems more likely to be the knives as a reference to Wolfenstein 3D, and for why Eric had the swastika on his knife. Even seems the same knife as Indiana Jones.
Oklahoma bombing. Given the above, it seems likely Oklahoma bombing meant the car bombs. Indeed to me that seems the only real connection.
The LA Riots I suppose could refer to the fires, or to the dead cops, or both. One does have to wonder if he included OJ as part of the aftermath of the LA Riots. If the diversion was meant to kill, it could also meant that as well.
It can do a lot of theoretical work to say Eric is the gun guy and the DOOM guy, while Dylan is the bomb guy and the Duke Nukem guy. Basically the same work as the "perfect storm" interlocking mental illnesses of "psychopath and depressive" but just with a division of labor.
I have to wonder if it meant "DOOM, Vietnam, and WW2" as in guns, knives, and napalm was Eric's job. He seemed to know the gun show loophole (the show had knives) and try to make the napalm. Eric left several things out in his room, but especially gun stuff - like the gun barrel on the shelf. Also didn't have the guns at the time of writing nor was sure he would get them, for why to put DOOM last.
And Duke, Oklahoma bombing, and LA Riots was Dylan's job. He seemed to be the bomb tech, and had the bigger car bomb. And that bigger car bomb was probably for police. Dylan left two pipe bombs out in his room. If LA Riots meant fire, perhaps the gas cans and white gas with the main bombs. Also Dylan does seem to write his job was to fill up the molotovs with gas and oil. Perhaps what he was doing as Eric bought the propane tanks.

PS I'll further add, if LA Riots means the diversion, it does make some sense as far as the order of operations for the attack
LA Riots - place diversion
OKC - drive to school, set cars
WW2 - equip self with knives
Vietnam - equip self with napalm
Duke - equip with bombs
DOOM - equip with guns
But that arguably would imply the diversion was meant to kill - and the cops say they feared it was a trip bomb. And there were two. So, first to lure them in, then a trip bomb when they respond may have been the idea.
And that further illustrates what I think was going on at the school, and why the cops stayed outside.
