I will add to what SaucyJimmy said. I think Adam also was interested in the show because of how it depicted life as so fake and artificial so to speak with the puppets being creepy looking. That would make sense because Adam saw life as an absurdity ultimately in his eyes after trying for years to rationalize it to himself. On top of all of that, Adam could also relate to the character Maynard in the show. There was a segment in the show that asked why Maynard was "blue". The song Maynard sings gives clues as to how Adam felt.
