When word that a gunman had opened fire inside of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School spread, two SWAT officers were compelled to help. They, separately, were already near the vicinity of the mass shooting but did not obtain permission before heading to the school to offer assistance, leading them to be suspended for their actions.
According to a report by the Sun Sentinel, Detectives Jeffrey Gilbert and Carl Schlosser were near the scene. One of the detectives had informed their supervisor that they were in Coral Springs, while the other SWAT officer’s precise whereabouts prior to responding to the school was not clear, said Tania Rues, a police spokeswoman.
“They were both close by,” said Rues.
While they were not under orders to go to the high school, they decided to head that direction anyway. According to their police department, this created an officer safety issue as well as left them unaccountable for the officers’ actions.
Gilbert and Schlosser were subsequently suspended and indefinitely removed from a “privileged program,” requiring them to surrender their SWAT-issued rifles, though leaving them on active duty.
The officers’ police union viewed the matter surrounding the detectives’ suspensions differently. On Wednesday, Jeff Marano, the president of Broward County PBA, stated, “While it may have been in violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think.”
So they are basically being punished for trying to help? How f*cked up!

That's not going to be good for him if he goes to trial.

OR it could help with his "I'm crazy the voices told me to do it" defense.

I've got a very disturbing question. Is Jaime Guttenberg the one on the leaked school footage?

Which footage? Are you talking about the videos that the kids themselves posted? Because to my knowledge nothing has been released from the schools security cams yet.

The lawyer for Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz has filed court papers saying he is withdrawing a preliminary not guilty plea and will enter no plea at all.
Assistant Public Defender Melisa McNeill said in the filing Thursday that Cruz “stands mute” before the court. She said the not guilty plea was entered prematurely, before a grand jury indicted Cruz on 17 murder and 17 attempted murder charges in the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The public defender’s office has said Cruz would plead guilty if prosecutors do not pursue the death penalty, but no decision has been announced on that.
The next step will be an arraignment for Cruz, where a judge likely would enter a not guilty plea for him to keep the process moving.

A court squabble has erupted over the handling of Nikolas Cruz’s inheritance from his late mother — a fight that could determine whether the accused school shooter is entitled to be free representation from a public defender or must hire a private lawyer. Boca Raton attorney Audra Simovitch filed an amended petition in Broward County probate court this week, alleging that Rocxanne Deschamps, a friend of Cruz’s mother who cared for Cruz and his younger brother after their mother died, should not be appointed to represent the estate. Simovitch is asking the court to appoint an independent personal representative.
Nikolas filed a petition on Feb. 23 asking that Zachary and Deschamps be appointed as co-representatives to administer his mother’s estate. He and his brother also authorized Simovitch to continue acting as their attorney.
But then things changed. A hearing scheduled in probate court was abruptly canceled last week, and Simovitch filed a motion alleging that Deschamps was trying to obfuscate various matters concerning the estate, court records show.
Simovitch, in Tuesday’s motion, details what she calls a litany of “red flags” that the court should consider alarming about Deschamps. It said Deschamps has in recent days worked against Simovitch in the lawyer’s effort to find out what the estate is worth and to share that information with the court and public defender.
Nikolas Cruz, who is 19, signed a letter on Feb. 20 authorizing Simovitch to work with the public defender — by providing copies of applicable documents and answering all questions about the estate. That would help determine whether he is eligible for a public defender or must hire private counsel at his own cost.
Simovitch alleges that Deschamps will not allow her to visit Cruz at the Broward County Jail unless Deschamps is present. She has also “refused to provide the registration or title to a 2015 Kia” believed to be one of the assets to Cruz’s mother’s estate, according to the motion.
It’s not clear how much Nikolas and his brother stand to gain from the estate. His mother had been hospitalized with a respiratory illness prior to her death on Nov. 1. Their father, Roger Cruz, died in 2004. At the time of her husband’s death, the estate was worth an estimated $1 million, according to court records. In addition to his wife and two adopted sons, Roger Cruz also had four other children from a prior marriage.
I still think this Deschamps woman is shady and greedy AF! Thankfully others are seeing it as well. Hopefully she will not be allowed to take advantage of this tragedy.

A judge will review security video on Friday that shows the outside of Stoneman Douglas High School on the day of the Valentine’s Day shooting. He will then decide if that footage should be made public.
During a hearing on Thursday, the school’s assistant principal told the judge he is worried that the video footage would expose their security system’s blind spots and that people would know where they could go on the campus without being recorded.
The video in question does not show anyone firing a weapon or getting hurt but it could shed new light on how the school’s resource officer responded during the shooting.
If the judge decides to release the footage, he would put a 48-hour stay on the order giving the sheriff's office and school district a chance to file an appeal. No word on when exactly he will make his decision.

Along with lingering mysteries regarding the shooting itself, the missing pieces are the focus of numerous ongoing inquiries from local, state and federal officials in the wake of one of the country’s deadliest school shootings, which claimed 17 lives. A central issue for many of the probes is what law enforcement officials did - and what authorities more broadly could or should have done - before, during and after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Authorities have acknowledged receiving multiple warnings about Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old shooting suspect, who was indicted Wednesday on 34 counts of premeditated murder and attempted murder. Those revelations have prompted intense scrutiny of how law enforcement officials handled the red flags.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the rampage, has declined to say whether it had identified a possible motive for the shooting nor has it said if there are any leading theories, citing the “active and ongoing investigation.” On Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s office also released a timeline detailing the massacre, expanding on the information police had made public in the aftermath of the shooting.
The sheriff’s office has borne much of the public criticism in the wake of the shooting, with embattled Sheriff Scott Israel becoming a lightning rod and facing calls for his suspension; Gov. Rick Scott, R, directed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review the police response to the shooting.
Israel has defended his leadership, while his office has launched several internal probes since the shooting. He and his office have defended how they treated most of the calls regarding the suspected shooter over the years, with a spokeswoman this week again emphasizing that despite repeated calls about Cruz and his family, officials found “no arrestable offenses, nor was there evidence to prompt an involuntary mental health assessment.”
Israel has acknowledged issues with two of the warning calls, saying “we’re not sure if deputies did everything they could have or should have.” Both of those calls - one in February 2016, the other in November 2017 - mentioned Cruz’s potential for attacking a school, and the sheriff’s office has announced internal investigations into each call.
Cruz’s attorneys have acknowledged his guilt and said he would plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence. On Thursday, they filed court documents withdrawing a not guilty plea previously filed on his behalf, saying that he instead opts to stand mute in response to the indictment handed down a day earlier.
Howard Finkelstein, the Broward County public defender, told The Washington Post that this is a way to avoid pleading in any way while prosecutors weigh whether to seek a death sentence.
“Pleading not guilty . . . just seemed wrong in this case,” Finkelstein wrote in an email. “A legal fiction that could bring unnecessary pain to the victims’ families.”

Some rumors are floating around Tumblr/Twitter that Roxanne Deschamps who took Nikolas and his brother in after their mother died, may have tried to start an inappropriate relationship with Nikolas Cruz in an effort to gain control of his inheritance.
Now I have found NOTHING to back this up, just a lot of speculation. It's a situation where this person told this person, who saw it on a Facebook/Tumblr/Twitter page etc. type thing.
But I will say that if this woman was actually trying to do this then she is even lower then I previously thought. That is just ALL kinds of f*cking wrong.

That's what I was thinking as well. BUT I haven't found anything to prove this truly happened. Although this woman did prove she was after the money, but I don't actually think she was going that far to obtain it.
Or at least I hope she wasn't, that's just NASTY AF!

Yes, she filed for control of the money the very next day after the shooting. So its clear that she didn't care about Nikolas. The money seemed to be her first priority. She was also arrested for fraud back in 2011.

Surveillance video taken during last month's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School could be released this week, according to multiple reports.
A judge on Monday ordered the release of that footage, ruling that public interest trumped the potential harm that could come from the disclosure of the cameras' locations, the Miami Herald reported.
Prosecutors, who unsuccessfully challenged arguments for the video's release, could still appeal the judge's ruling. The Herald reported the video would not become public until Thursday at the earliest.

Can't really blame him for that. After all, there's already been tons of threats about copycats, and it is the worst high school shooting in history right now, so people'll probably be inspired by him due to his score.

But newly filed court records claim that Nikolas Cruz may be heir to far more and that a family friend has stonewalled efforts to find out the full extent of his inheritance.
That friend, Rocxanne Deschamps of Lantana, had filed papers a day after the school shooting to be named personal representative over the estate of Lynda Cruz, the mother of Nikolas.
A Boca Raton attorney handling the case, Audra Simovitch, now is claiming in court documents that Deschamps is blocking discovery of the true assets in the estate.
Simovitch withdrew from the probate case Tuesday at the jailhouse request of Nikolas, according to court documents.
The attorney has told the court she has reason to believe Deschamps has control over the dead woman’s furniture, a $5,000 engagement ring, a grand piano, Louis Vuitton wallet, elephant crystal figurines, credit and debit cards, and bank statements.
The court filing also contends that Nikolas and his younger brother, Zachary, may be beneficiaries to money left in trusts and to proceeds from an insurance policy and an annuity.
Previously in court records, the only asset reportedly left by Lynda, who died of pneumonia Nov. 1, was the Kia. An earlier court petition had said Lynda died without a will, but the new filing claims a will may, indeed, exist.
Deschamps did not respond to an email requesting comment.
Nikolas’ assets are important because he is a client of the Broward Public Defender’s Office, which is court-appointed to serve only the indigent. People with wealth are obligated to hire their own attorneys. The Public Defender’s Office has asked the court and the Broward Clerk of Courts to determine if Nikolas has assets that could pay for his legal defense.
Simovitch said in the court papers that she was “no longer able to give effective legal counsel” and has “irreconcilable differences” with Nikolas. Her decision to withdraw also came as Zachary, now 18, asked a judge to disqualify her from representing his brother, according to court records. She was hired in December by Nikolas to handle the probate case.
Simovitch told the South Florida Sun Sentinel: “In 24 years of practicing, I’ve never quite had this happen before. Usually people are fighting about assets once the estate is opened, not prior to getting it opened.”
A new attorney now is asserting that he’s representing Zachary.
Jose M. Lorenzo, Jr., a Coral Gables probate attorney, recently notified Simovitch by email that he would petition the court to have Zachary appointed as the representative of Lynda’s estate. He asked that she turn over her files to him.
Reached by the Sun Sentinel Tuesday evening Lorenzo said: “I only represent Zachary.” He declined to comment further or answer questions.
Before the shooting, Nikolas told the parents of a schoolmate who took him in after his mother’s death, that he would inherit $800,000 when he turns 22.
This all seems shady AF to me.

So while other first responders descended on the Parkland, Fla., school following the Feb. 14 shooting, Coconut Creek officer Michael Leonard got into his squad car and zoomed through the area.
"(Cruz) was on foot, so I knew he couldn't be far," Leonard, a 17-year veteran with the Coconut Creek department, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Friday. "There was no senior personnel there to direct me or tell me what to do. I decided to head out on my own, alone."
Suddenly, while driving down Wyndham Lakes Drive a few miles from Stoneman Douglas, Leonard spotted a young man who matched the description of the suspected shooter: black jeans, a cap, maroon sweater.
Leonard was stunned by how young Cruz looked. "He looked like a student. He was just a skinny little guy," he said.
Getting out of the car with his gun drawn, Leonard shouted at Cruz to surrender. The 19-year-old gunman complied.
"It was probably overwhelming to him," Leonard said. "I just flooded him with commands. I told him to turn around, and he looked me right in the eye, looking down the barrel of my gun."
Leonard refused to divulge what he and Cruz talked about as other officers rushed to Wyndham Lakes Drive. But he revealed that the suspected mass murderer appeared "eerily calm."

I wonder if this is going to be used to paint Cruz as a psychopath. I know Langman takes things like that into consideration.

I don't think that he was calm, I think he had high adrenaline levels, and he didn't planned to commit suicide so apparently he waited when police gonna get him

No I think he honestly expected to get away with it. He strikes me as being that stupid.

His intelligence is certainly in question, BUT he was smart enough to pull it off.
I'm just trying to figure out if he had planned this for a long time or if it was more a spur of the moment type thing.
