Maybe the reason we are interested in Columbine.

I've been meaning to post this video since i watched it a few weeks back. I miss the 90s massively so any chance i get to watch a video of it i will. I came across a watchmojo video some lists i dont agree with but this was a pretty interesting top 10 list to me, and not to my surprise columbine was rated quite high. I wont often or at all bring up Columbine in a social situation usually because i feel i'd have to explain the whole event, dates etc and would think not many people have any idea of it. But this video sort of gives me some reassurance that i'm not part of a community which only remembers columbine.

I'm 27 almost 28 and I'm obsessed with the 90s too. It's interesting to see someone in a different country share the same interest in a decade of our lives haha.

Dave Sanders is also featured on a similar list to that--I can't remember if it too is a WatchMojo list, but it's something like "10 images captured shortly before death" or something like that.

I don't think the 90s have aged as badly as the 70s or 80s but that's because I lived through them so they're like yesterday to me. Some items from the decade have aged very badly though nonetheless. In particular, "Natural Born Killers," the film that Eric and Dylan named their massacre after, is possibly the most badly dated film of the 1990s--a barrage of godawful MTV-style filming techniques and absolutely no subtlety whatsoever.

If I were a schoolteacher, and wanted to make current generations think the 90s were a load of people acting like total retards, I'd show them "Hitmen For Hire" and wait for their reactions to "NO YOU LITTLE PUNK ASS PIECE OF SHIT!!!" The way you might show kids some godawful disco roller rink movie from the 70s to make them think the 70s were hideous, or that old Menudo "Me Gusta Bailar" clip if you wanted to make them hate the 80s.

The 1999 class photo looks like an ad for Abercrombie & Fitch-type late-90s fashions. You can practically see the cast of "American Pie" in the pic.

I posted this in another thread at one point, but I literally got back into columbine "research" because of nostalgia. I originally semi-researched it in 2004-ish and didn't get back into it again until last year. What brought me back was unintentionally stumbling upon edits people had made of e&d's videos that I had never seen before (I had previously only seen stills). I found these while searching the 1999 tag on Instagram after posting a picture of myself from that year and seeing if anyone else had any funny pics of themselves as teenagers from back then. I was a sophomore in high school when columbine happened so a lot of aspects of it are familiar to me anyway.

I agree that the 90s doesn't seem as far away as it actually is. I miss the styles and the music (I have yet to see anyone accurately replicate a lot of 90s looks today without it having something modern that gives it away! I've seen people do it successfully for other decades, but they always seem to miss it for the 90s.). I even liked the dark aspects of it. I kinda miss the lack of technology, and even the way kids hung out was different then... But I guess the same can be said for all generations before the 2000s. I even miss little things like seeing band stickers on people's cars, which you don't really see anymore (at least I haven't in Years)... The future seemed bright then, now it seems kinda bleak haha.

PS: Aww I thought Natural Born Killers had a very artistic style to it! I'll admit it was highly unrealistic and over the top which could be annoying at times, but I always liked it. I don't think I've watched it in 10-15 years though, so maybe if I saw it now it would seem more dated.

NBK was *praised* for its lack of subtlety in 1994. Making movies based on then-trendy MTV filming techniques won it acclaim for the same reason something like "Purple Rain" would have been praised a decade earlier than that (the movie that is.) Go read Ebert's review--"this movie is like a slap in the face!" And the "postmodern," "everything under the sun" way Stone shifts styles (fake sitcoms, gritty prison drama, MTV schlock, creepy surrealism) would have fooled a lot of critics back then too. That was the 90s for ya.

I can't believe that Watchmojo list ranked Columbine over the Lewinsky scandal--obviously the Columbine massacre is a far uglier tragedy, but the Lewinsky thing was THE media shitstorm of 1998 through when Columbine finally happened, just like it took the OKC bombing to finally knock OJ off the news in 1995.

But you are correct--"nostalgia" for 1999 can play into this discussion, certainly, just like 60s/70s nostalgia might lead someone to look into Kent State.

I'm 32 and am also very nostalgic of the 90s, I am stuck there it seems and I seem to be fine with that lol. All the music I listen to with my favorite bands being Tool, NOFX and NIN, all of my favorite movies are also from the late 90s and I even still kinda dress like I did back then often with band shirts and black pants, skates shoes...It's like I don't want to leave that decade, I must look pretty ridiculous to some people, but I have noticed a lot of people around my age do the same thing.

Anything that happened between 1995-2005, I seem to be more interested in than other cases or news. I feel like its probably like that for a lot of people with the music of their adolescence and so on. I hear music now and thing "why does all the music suck?Bring back good music" I'm sure my parents think the same thing about the music I listen to as well.

Yeah I know exactly how you feel. I'm kinda stuck in the 80's/90's myself. Seems that once we got to the mid 2000's technology took over every aspect of life. We are now all glued to our phones, tablets etc. people no longer seem to be able to interact on a person to person level. Don't get me wrong, in a lot of ways our quality of life is better now but I do definitely long for those "simpler times". But what do I know? I'm just an old fart that longs for his youth, haha!

I think the early 2000s was when we had the perfect amount of technology. The internet existed, cell phones existed, but smart phones and all of these countless social media apps didnt. And everyone had to actually go out and socialise

Eric actually talked about a few of those events in his journal. He talked about hating the OJ Trial. When he was talking about what "NBK" would be like he mentioned the L.A. Riots and the Oklahoma Bombing and both of those were on the list. And Columbine ended up being higher on the list than both of them.

Eric may have mentioned the Lewinsky affair as well but I'm not 100% on that one.

I would have loved to have been Eric and Dylan's friend before they went crazy that is. I think they had it in their heads that the whole world was against them, that wasn't the case.

Tool is awesome. I didn't start listening to them until after the 90s (Lateralus) so I don't really hear them and think about the 90s but rock music in general was better in the 90s than now for sure.
