On July 2, 2017, 42-year-old veterinarian Osvaldo Campos Azócar visited the Sun Monticello, a casino in Mostazal, Chile. After losing 18 million pesos (worth $33,000 USD today), he pulled a handgun from his pocket and shot his table's croupier, Óscar Elías Reyes Valenzuela (36), in the head, killing him. Campos continued his shooting spree, injuring several other people. One of them, a casino worker by the name of Carolina de los Ángeles Carreño Ávila (34), would later die of her injuries (four gunshot wounds) in the nearby Hospital de Graneros. Four to six others were non-lethally injured. After the rampage, he locked himself in a bathroom of the establishment where, after five hours, he committed suicide by lethal injection.

Campos ran a YouTube channel where he curated various TV appearances of him and his clinic, Veterinaria Maipú. However, his career was surrounded by various accusations of medical malpractice, such as awarding himself fictitious credentials, microwaving the corpse of a cat to ensure that its body would be returned warm to its owners, and allegedly even intentionally killing the pets of customers who refused to pay. His personal life was just as tumultuous, having lost both his parents and his brother over the years leading up to the shooting.

The casino was later ordered to pay a Ch$110 million (US$156,000 today) settlement to the family of Óscar Reyes.
