I feel it's unfair the victims have to pay after suffering such a horrific tragedy however, I also don't believe the cinema could be held liable for the tragedy either. I'm eager to hear other opinions though.

Uhm no. It could happen and it happens everywhere actually. When you lose a court case, you cover the costs of the trial for the winning side in addition to your own expenses (lawyers, court taxes, witness expenses etc.). I'm a law clerk so I see this stuff all the time, especially with piss poor people losing cases that had no chance of winning in the first place. The very first thing they taught us in law school was law=//=justice but dura lex, sed lex works as well.

But in the USA it could lead to another massacre, any excuse to start shooting is all they need.

What if it were the people behind that decision? Then we'll talk.

Well, its not like it is a a fine for being a survivor. These are legal costs that the plaintiffs were then ordered to pay as a result of bringing what the court decided are groundless charges against the chain.

If you accuse someone and your charge is declared groundless, you lose the case and in Colorado you can be charged with teh costs of the case. Simple as that.

I am not saying if the court verdict is just or not (I don't have the data to decide either way). Waht I am saying is that the cause is clear and teh losing side in a lawsuit shouldn't be surprised by the costs. Their lawers should have (and probably did) inform them about the risk.

They've sued the theater over not being extremely paranoid over security and not preparing for an extremely unlikely event. Not smart or ethical.

USA has, like 40000 cinema screens and billions of cinema tickets sold per year and it was the only cinema shooting I've heard about so it's ridiculous to expect a cinema to be prepared for something like this.
But yeah it's a country where people do massive school walkouts about near-non-existent school rampage shootings instead of walking out to demand compensations and other help for students subjected to psychological liquidation at schools which is actually a realistic threat at school so what else one could expect...

Obvious problem is they live in society that isn't based on solidarity so when they got massively fucked over by fate they were considered to be somehow "responsible" for it so they tried to shift the "responsibility" to the theater chain.
