Winnenden School Shooting

On March 11th, 2009, a shooting spree happened in the towns of Winnenden and Wendlingen, Germany. Before it started, 17 year old Tim Kretschmer (born July 26 1991) that morning went into his parents and retrieved his fathers 9 MM Beretta 92F INOX handgun and a few hundred rounds of ammo. Then, at 9:30 A.M (Central European Time) Tim arrived at the Albertville-Realschule, where he was a former student. He walked in, and rushed to the 2nd floor. He entered a classroom, and shot and killed 5 students in the head. He then entered another classroom, where he killed 2 more students and injured 9 people. 2 of those 9 injured, would die en route to the hospital. Tim then left this classroom to reload his Beretta, however, the teacher in that classroom quickly rushed to lock the door to prevent Tim from reentering. Tim then tried to shoot the lock to break it, but he was unsuccessful. He then went into a chemistry lab and shot and killed a teacher in there. At 9:33, the first police emergency calls were made, at 9:35, the first police officers arrived at the school. When they entered, Tim fired at the officers (none were hit) and fled. Upon fleeing, Tim encountered 2 female teachers in a hallway, and killed them both. Tim fired more than 60 rounds inside the school, and also was said to have yelled during the rampage "Are you not all dead yet!?" Once Tim escaped the school, he went to a hospital near the school where he found a gardener working in the hospital's garden, he shot and killed him.

When police investigated the school, they found some unused ammunition, and suggested that Tim had planned on staying in the school and continue the killing for a little longer.

Upon hearing of a shooting at the school, news stations learned that Tim was not seen anywhere and was still on the loose, and nobody knew where he was, and people were warned to not pick up any hitchhikers. Police were searching for Tim for hours in Winnenden, but no trace of him was found.

At 10:00 A.M Tim was actually still hiding in Winnenden from the police, until he encountered driver Igor Wolf. He managed to take him hostage and ordered Wolf to drive him to Wendlingen. During the drive, Tim revealed to Igor that he was the one who did the shooting at the school, and that he planned on continuing his rampage in Wendlingen. Wolf also reported that Kretschmer was loading bullets into magazines during the drive and asked him "Do you think we will find another school?" Igor also asked Tim why he was shooting people, where he replied "For fun. because its fun" Shortly after 12:00, they arrived in Wendlingen, until Igor saw a police officer, where he then steered into a grass verge, and got out and ran towards the police patrol car. Tim then immediately got out and ran towards a nearby industrial area, and went into a Volkswagen showroom through the main entrance. He pointed his gun at a salesperson and demand car keys. However, Tim was distracted by something, and the salesperson escaped. Tim then shot another salesperson and a customer, killing both. Tim then reloaded, while another salesperson and a visitor fled through the rear exit. At 12:30, Tim exited the showroom and fired at a passing car. The driver was not injured. Shortly after, the police arrived and began firing at Tim. Tim retreated back into the showroom and fired 12 shots from inside at the police. He then retreated outside through the rear exit, and ran towards a parking lot, Upon fleeing there, he came across 2 police officers sitting in their patrol car and shot and injured both of them. Some reports say at this point he also began firing at buildings and people, however nobody was hit. Upon police entering the parking lot, Tim fired at officers and Swat, hitting none of them , but one police officer fired 8 shots at Tim, hitting him once in both legs. Witnesses say Tim then reloaded his weapon while injured and shot himself in the head. The final moments of the shootout and Tim's life were recorded by a witness Tim was then later identified as the gunman at the school. In total, Tim killed 15 people, and injured 9 others. He fired a total of 112 bullets throughout the spree.

Tim lived with his parents in the municipality of Leutenbach. At the time of the shooting, he was attending a college and had graduated from Albertville-Realschule in 2008 with bad grades. Classmates who knew Tim said he was a loner who was bullied often at the school. Tim was also battling with depression and anxiety and was also diagnosed with Depressive Disorder. The majority of his victims were females which some people suggested he was targeting girls and wanted to be in a relationship with one. One friend of Kretschmer said he was an angry and frustrated person, and felt rejected by society. Tim was reportedly apart of a table tennis club between 2000 and 2003 (though it seems based on internet videos of him being older, he may have been playing the sport for much longer) His coach said he was spoiled and his mother had obeyed his every demand. He also had difficulty accepting defeat and would have temper tantrums upon losing a game. Shouting and throwing his racket. His couch said he often made fun of his teammates. Tim was also said to have played poker with schoolmates after school at a cafe. In 2008, Tim was hospitalized at a psychiatric hospital for clinical depression as an in-patient. While there, he reportedly told a psychiatrist about his violent fantasies and he thought "Humanity is evil". Upon being discharged, he was to continue treatment as an out-patient, but he cancelled it. However some reports say he did continue treatment, but his parents rejected these claims. But he was seeing a therapist 5 times after this about his anger issues and urges to commit violence. The therapist did tell his parents about it. Based on inspections on his computer, one online social media account of his had the Columbine High School shooters as his profile picture. The game Counter Strike was also found, in which the media claimed violent video games caused Tim's actions. Also found was the game Far Cry 2, in which the media also claimed he played Far Cry 2 online as "JawsPredator2" the night before the shooting. Police also found BDSM Pornography, and also said he had viewed a movie on this kind of Pornography the night before in addition to Far Cry 2.

The gun used :

Tim's father reported he had only taken Tim to the shooting range only 3 times in his entire life. Tim also owned a number of Airsoft guns, in which he would shoot either in the woods in the back of his house or in his basement. A teacher said she made Tim and his English and German Ethnics class write an essay on the topic "Gun Laws: Yes or No?" Tim in his essay mentioned violent video games, Robert Steinhauser and the Erfurt School Shooting, and how the media reacts to mass shootings. So it appears Tim believed gun laws wouldn't change anything.

Nobody to this day seems to know the true motive as to why Tim committed the attack. But some speculated he was inspired by the Geneva County Shootings that happened in the United States the day before, but however, it is not known if Tim even heard of the shootings. But, based on his school essay, and his profile picture, its obvious Tim was well familiar with mass violence. Most people believe mental illness and his violent fantasies, could have been the trigger for the attack. Police found a letter written by Tim to his parents that wrote three weeks before, saying that he was suffering and that he could not go on any longer. Others say it was the bullying from school that maybe got to him and that he wanted revenge. Other theories include how he felt he was failing in life and wanted revenge at society and how he was angry at women. (Though in my opinion, based on what he said at the hospital, Misanthropy could be the number one motive)

Sometime after the shooting, Tim's father was convicted and sentenced on manslaughter charges for 1 year and six months in prison for not properly locking up his handgun while the other guns were locked up. His guns were also confiscated and his gun license was suspended from him.
Tim's grandparents once said to news outlets that he, his sister and his mother would come to his grandparents house for dinner often, noting he was very quiet, and after done eating would lay down in the living room floor and curl up next to his grandparents cat. "He was very fond of the cat" his grandfather said.

Ali David Sonboly, the 18 year old who committed the shooting spree in Munich back in 2016, was obsessed with Tim Kretschmer, along with other mass shootings and school shootings. He even went to the Albertville-Realschule and took pictures of the building.

He was filling his magazines the whole time; I could see it in the mirror. He was preparing for the next shooting, I thought.
Then he asked me: “Do you think we will find another school?”

The car rolled a bit backwards into the mire, I don’t know. I ran away in a jab jab, so it was harder for him to hit me. I knew that he was a good marksman, I could see that by the way he hold his gun. I felt, got up again and ran to the police car. I had to get to the police, I had to get in safety and tell them what happened.

The last thing I saw of him, was him standing at the back of the car. The police couldn’t see us, they were standing in the other direction; and this small knoll was taking their view.

There are also two extreme positions in the Winnenden rampage: either it is due to an exclusive conspiracy or indeed a chance act by a "mentally ill" adolescent. In my opinion, and I come back to David Cohen back, can not logically convince any of the two points of view, considered in isolation. I think that the truth is actually at the two outer ends, which are still connected.
