Mass stabbings

Does anybody read up on these? There hasn’t been too many of those here in the states. In Great Britain and Japan when some bloke runs amuck, they usually carry knives. So far in the United States, there has only been a handful of mass stabbings. Those include:

9/11
Worst act of a mass stabbing / vehicle-ramming in the US; possibly in the world. At least 6 died and 5 were injured by knives in the planes and over 2,000 others died as a result of the crashes that came afterwards.

Attica prison riot
Prior to the riots that left 39 people dead after police opened indiscriminate fire on inmates and hostages, prisoners had stabbed three fellow inmates to death with shanks in vigilant killings and bludgeoned a correctional officer to death with a soup can.

The killings that took place in Georgetown, Guyana during the Jonestown massacre
Sharon Amos had stabbed two of her children to death with a knife in the Temple’s headquarters building in Georgetown, Guyana before handing the knife over to her eldest daughter so that she then stabbed her to death with it before stabbing herself to death in a suicide pact. Didn’t happen on US soil, but it was still the second deadliest attack on US life since 1945. And I only included this one as a bonus because even though it happened in a public setting, it was still somewhat a familicide and the mother only killed two with the other two deaths being a suicide pact, and in mass murders, the perpetrator(s) are never counted. But overall, that still amounts to four deaths total.

I remember liberals calling for more gun laws after this happened, when in reality half of the victims died from stabbing and half of those wounded were by being struck with a BMW.

Julian Carlton
Killed 7 people with an axe, injuring 2, after setting fire to a building.

1860 Wiyot massacre
Some white colonists marched into an Indian reservation, killing between 80 - 250 with axes, clubs, knives and guns.

2001 Greyhound bus attack
Some Croatian tried to hijack a Greyhound by slashing the drivers throat with a utility knife and grabbed control of the steering wheel and drove it off the road, killing 6 passengers and himself. The driver survived.

Wonderland murders
An unknown number of men entered a townhouse armed with hammers and metal pipes and killed 4, injuring 1. The crime remains unsolved, but was likely drug related.

John Murphy
Attacked co-workers with a knife at a slaughterhouse in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1909; killing 5 wounding 4.

Julian Marcelino
Ran amok through the streets of Seattle, Washington in a 30-minute rampage in 1932, leaving 6 dead and 15 wounded.

Marie Walkup
Stabbed 3 of her kids to death and strangled the last one before driving away and fatally shooting herself in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1937.

William “Willie” Jones
In 1950, Willie Jones had grabbed a large bread knife from a butcher shop and ran amuck through the streets of Brooklyn, New York; killing 4, wounding 3.

Jose Antonio Suarez
In April 1966, Jose Torres killed his wife and 5 kids in their shared apartment in New York City, New York.

Richard Speck
In July 1966, Richard Speck had stabbed and strangled 8 female college nursing students to death in their room at a townhouse in Chicago, Illinois.

Lawrence “Pumpkin” Jackson and Robert Driskel
In September 1986, Jackson and Driskel had entered a public housing apartment in Chicago, Illinois and stabbed 5 people, killing 4, during a robbery.

Ramon Salcido
Slit the throats of his three daughters and left them to die at an abandoned trash dump, with one surviving; then stabbing his mother-in-law to death along with her two kids before shooting his wife dead and shooting two others at the Grand Cru Vineyard, killing one, wounding the other.

Anyone else heard of any mass stabbings, either in the US or elsewhere?

The Sagamihara stabbings, the Osaka school massacre and the Akihabara massacre.

2014 Calgary Stabbing (Matthew de Grood), Maksim Gelman, Nanping School Massacre (Zheng Minsheng), Yangxiaoxiang Stabbing Spree (Guo Zhongmin), Krong Pak Stabbing Spree (Duong Van Mon), Anne Anne Kindergarten Stabbing Spree (Lee Chi Hang) & 1947 Malaysian Train Stabbing (Mat Taram bin Sa'al)

London Bridge Attack (Mass stabbing/vehicle attack), St. Cloud mall stabbing, the Neomugicha incident, Kawasaki stabbing, Spring High School stabbing, UC Merced stabbing, the University of Texas stabbing, the 2018 Paris knife attack, the Yema stabbings and don't forget the infamous Franklin Regional High School Stabbing incident.

Lourenço Pereira Maurício: Maurício, an epileptic, worked at the Afogados market selling fruits. When he suffered attacks from epilepsy, his colleagues always helped him. On November 6, 1978 he suffered another epileptic attack and, instead of helping, people laughed at him. He got angry and fetched a peixeira knife and attacked others, killing three people. He then attempted to escape a lynching attempt, but was arrested by two soldiers. He was then sent to the Ministro Mourão Filho prison.

Siquijor massacre: In 1905 Commissioner Dean Conant Worcester related to the Manila Times that many years prior a man had killed about 32 people on the island Siquijor, Philippines. According to the report the man one Sunday waylaid the people who were returning from church to their rural homes. After dispatching one group with his bolo he would move closer towards town until he chanced upon the next party, thus preventing for some time that information about the murders could spread. He continued in this manner until the slaughter was finally discovered, whereupon the people stoned him to death.

Hubert Headley: On December 9, 1994 at around 5 p.m. Headley attacked his own mother with a machete at their home on 152 Middle Walk, Friendship and then went to attack a young girl. He then returned to his mother and killed her. He then went to the house of Otis Robinson and killed a 2-year-old boy playing in the yard that was with four other children. The other four other children escaped. He then attacked a girl standing at a lantern, she tried to escape but he caught her and killed her with a chop in the neck. Near Lot 150 he killed a dog with a chop to his neck. He also killed Maude Hatton. He attacked a boy in a bicycle, who managed to escape, and he then went to the Buxton Company Path. There he killed two men. When police started shooting him he began dancing and laughing. He was shot dead. All of the victims except for the 2-year-old were hacked in the neck, and their heads were almost severed.

Here’s some familicides that didn’t use guns with 6 dead. I’ll post ones with 7 or more dead in the next post. Just posting this one here for now since that took a lot of research just for all the familicides with six dead alone (I had to do some digging for 70 different cases, which is where I drew these 33 from). 14.) Earl H. Lewis (6 dead by carbon monoxide poisoning in a tightly sealed car while they slept in it, with a vacuum cleaner hose that led from the muffler up through a hole in the floorboard. The car’s exhaust pipe had been stoppered with a wadded rag.)

15.) Mark Pulliam (1 dead by knife, 5 dead by fire)

16.) Esker Washington Gibson (beat his wife unconscious with a chair before dousing her and the rest of the house in kerosene and burning it down, killing her and his five children)

17.) Louise Nicosia (accidentally killed her six children as she turned the gas burner on the stove to release natural gas which poisoned her kids and herself, but she survived)

18.) Elsie Nollen (6 dead by carbon monoxide poisoning as she pumped the gas from her car into the house, killing herself and six children)

19.) William A. Albers (6 dead; 3 by clubbing with a ball bat, 3 by rifle, he also burned down the farmhouse where they lived)

20.) Mary Pasos (6 dead from natural gas poisoning after she released the gas from the gas jet on the stove, killing herself and six children)

21.) Phillip Noble Millis (6 dead by axe before he hanged himself)

22.) Guy M. Taylor (6 dead by slitting their throats with a razor/bowie knife before he slit his own throat)

23.) Ellen C. Johnson (6 dead after she locked herself and children inside the home, doused the floor in kerosene, and burned it down)

24.) William S. McWilliams (6 dead by bludgeoning each with a hammer once and then stabbing them all to death to finish them off after one of his victims got back up and attacked him)

25.) Elizabeth Ann Naramore (1 dead by club, 5 dead by axe)

27.) Jens Hansen (6 dead from asphyxiation after he turned on the gas jets on the stove as his family slept, poisoning them all to death. He also died from asphyxiation from the gas.)

28.) James C. Dunham (broke his wife’s neck, shot three people dead and killed another two with an axe)

29.) Jose Trujillo Gallegos (1 dead by gunfire, 1 unknown, 4 by having their throats slashed)

30.) “Dakin” / Stonefort familicide (6 dead from having their throats slit with a razor before he killed himself by slitting his own throat with a razor)

31.) Manuel David / Elizabeth David (the father killed himself two days prior to his wife pushing seven of their kids off the balcony, with only one surviving before leaping to her own death.)

32.) Robert McConaughy (1 dead by stabbing, 2 dead by rifle balls, 3 dead by bludgeoning with rocks)

33.) Danny Eugene Crump (6 dead by dynamite blast)

Damian Rzeszowski: Killed 6 including his family before attempting suicide in what would be known as the 'Jersey Slayings' in 2011, before dying in prison in 2018.

Daniel O’Kane (7 dead; 5 of the children killed had their skulls crushed with a hammer while the four oldest ones had their throats cut from ear-to-ear, his mother’s head had been crushed with a hammer and shot in the temple with a revolver, same with the youngest child (who happened to be a 5-month-old baby). Daniel’s father James had been shot once in the right temple, all the while as they slept, before turning the gun on himself.)

9.) James T. Grant (7 dead, all by clubbing. He then hanged himself in the barn.)

10.) Julia Markham (7 dead by cutting the children’s throats with an axe before dousing their bodies and the house in gasoline and setting it on fire. She then committed suicide by slitting her own throat with an axe and butcher knife, bleeding to death.)

11.) August Kraus (7 dead by bludgeoning with a sledgehammer before striking himself in his own head with said hammer before dying around midnight.)

12.) Nathan Reed (7 dead by cutting all seven of his victims throats while they slept before burning the house down. He then proceeded to cut his throat with the same knife several times until, after finding this method too painful, jumped into a well and drowned to death.)

13.) Moritz Kaiser (7 dead by mattock or grub hoe; all had their skulls beaten in, before the house was set on fire. The farmer than, either after taking poison or under intoxication from alcohol, stood in the fire, so that he was burned with the rest of them after cutting his own throat. His body was found between the boys and the bed with his wife and baby on it, twisted and distorted, showing evidence that the living nerves and muscles writhed before the flame.)

14.) Judy Kirby (7 dead after she deliberately rammed her car into a head-on collision with a van, killing three of her own kids and a nephew, as well as the driver and the driver’s two kids. She survived the wreck and was charged with murder.)

15.) Hannah Hildebrandt (7 dead by poisoning. She then hanged herself.)

16.) Ramon Salcido (7 dead; 5 by stabbing, 2 by gunfire)

17.) Peter Joseph Akulonis (8 dead; 6 by hacking with an axe, 2 by gunfire)

Yan Yanming: Killed 9 and wounded 3 with a knife in a attack on a high school dormitory in Ruzhou, China back in 2004.

Anton Lundin Pettersson: Used a sword to kill 3 and injure 1 at Kronan School in Trollhättan, Sweden in 2015.

Min Yongjun: Attacked 24 people at Chenpeng Village Primary School in China in 2012.

Lee Chi Hang: Killed 6 people and wounded 37 with knives and chisels in Hong Kong back in1982.

Yasuaki Uwabe: Killed 5 people and injured 10 with a car and knife in an attack at Shimonoseki Station, Yamaguchi, Japan in 1999.

Yang Qingpei: Killed 19 people including members of his family with a knife in Yema, China back in 2016.

Zhao Zewei: Killed 9 students and injured 11 in an attack at a school in Mizhi County, China back in 2018.

Wu Huanming: Killed 8 students with a cleaver at a kindergarten in Hanzhong, China in 2010 just two months after the Nanping school massacre.

2014 Kunming attack: Xinjiang separatists killed 31 people and wounded 143 at a station in Kunming, China back in 2014.

Huang Guozhen: Killed 16-17 people with a firewood knife in Qinzhou, China back in 1989.

Earl H. Lewis had locked his wife and five children in a car along with himself under the pretext of working on a motor, before getting in the car, turning on the motor and closing the doors and windows as the CO gas was introduced into the car through a vacuum cleaner hose which came from a muffler up through the floorboard, with the cars exhaust pipe being stoppered with a wadded rag; introducing the gas into the car while his wife and children slept. They all asphyxiated to death.

Jens Hansen (aka Peter Hougaard) had waited until his wife and five children were asleep, then turned on the gas jets on the stove and calmly laid down and awaited his own death, as well as that of his wife and kids. He had recently lost a considerable amount of money at the time of his death and was a fugitive in Denmark.

May 26, 1896
James C. Dunham broke his wife’s neck, shot three people dead and killed another two with an axe. All of his victims were either family members of his wife, and two of them were family servants.

February 17, 1885
Jose Trujillo Gallegos cut the throats of his wife, two daughters and a young son. He had also killed two other people by shooting with a Winchester rifle, including a rancher who had an affair with his wife.

March 25, 1871
“Dakin” cut the throats of his wife and five children, including two sons and two daughters and a 1-year-old baby before running into the forest and cutting his own throat. All 7 died from their injuries.

August 3, 1978
Manuel David committed suicide two days prior to his wife, Rachel David pushing their seven kids off the balcony, with only one surviving before leaping to her own death. Manuel, also known as Bruce David Longo, was the leader of his own small religious sect and was found in a canyon east of Salt Lake City, Utah dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.

May 30, 1840
Robert McConaughy cut the throat of a woman, fatally shot the oldest son and daughter with rifle balls, then beat the brains out of the younger three children with stones. He also shot and wounded the husband with a rifle ball grazing his jaw and exiting off the ear.

Danny Eugene Crump placed a dynamite bomb on the hood of his ex-wife’s car, which, when opened, exploded, killing her along with five other members of her family, and tearing apart their Olathe, Kansas home.

Moritz Kaiser killed his wife and six kids by crushing their skulls in with a mattock or grub-hoe, before he cut his own throat and laid in the middle of his dead family inside the farmhouse after setting it on fire; possibly while under the influence of poison or alcohol, killing himself.

March 25, 2000
Judy Kirby killed three of her kids and a nephew along with the driver of a van and the driver’s two kids after she deliberately crashed her car head-on into another vehicle in traffic. She survived the crash and is charged with murder.

January 13, 1896
Hannah Hildebrandt poisoned her eight children using phosphorus from parlor matches that she dissolved in whiskey, killing 7. She gave each of her kids a cup of whiskey, telling them that it would help them with sleep. She then took the poison herself, but as it didn’t take effect as soon as she had hoped, hanged herself in the barn. Only one of the eight children survived the poisoning.

April 14, 1989
Ramon Salcido Bojorquez had taken his three daughters to an abandoned trash dump, raped them before slitting their throats and leaving them for dead. One survived, the other two died. He then drove to his mother-in-law’s house where he stabbed her and her two children to death, before going to his house and shooting his wife before finally driving to the Grand Cru Vineyard where shot two men, killing one, wounding the other.

April 15, 1953
Peter Joseph Akulonis killed his wife, son, mother, a brother and two nephews with a carpenter’s axe, shot another brother and another son with a .22 caliber rifle before killing himself with the same rifle.

July 9, 1936
Celestino P. Gonzalez murdered his wife and six children with an axe before shooting a man who she was cheating on him with dead before shooting himself.

June 25, 1969
Rafael Torres stabbed his wife and seven children to death with a hunting knife.

Guy Heinze bludgeoned to death his father, a family friend, his four children, his sister and the boyfriend of his daughter. One 3-year-old child survived (the son of his daughter). The suspect considered this family friend to be an uncle, and his children to be his cousins. The blunt object used has not been identified.

July 9, 1806
James Purrington killed his wife and seven kids with an axe before slitting his throat with a razor. A son survived.

Lorne Joe Acquin murdered his foster brother’s wife, her seven children and their niece with a tire iron before setting fire to the building.

John Waszak detonated 40 pounds of dynamite, killing his wife and eight children.

George Jefferson Hassell murdered his wife and eight children; his wife died by ball-peen hammer, 6 of his youngest kids were killed by strangulation with stockings and cutting with a straight razor, and his two eldest sons with a shotgun and axe.

August 6, 1887
Thomas George Woolfolk killed his father, stepmother, their six children, and a relative of his stepmother with an axe.

November 10, 1805
Abel Clemmens murdered his pregnant wife and eight children with an axe.

December 22 - 28, 1987
Ronald Gene Simmons, Sr. first shot his wife and eldest son to death, before strangling his 3-year-old granddaughter; he then he strangled and drowned in a rain barrel three of his other children before shooting another son and his son’s wife, strangling and drowning their 20-month-old son. He then shot and killed his oldest daughter along with her husband. He then strangled two more of his children to death before driving to four different places and shooting people who he held personal grudges against, killing 2, wounding 4, before sitting in the office of a freight company and chatting with one of the secretaries before handing himself over to police. Ultimately, 16 people died, making it the deadliest familicide in United States history. Eight died by strangulation/drowning in a rain barrel and another eight dead and four wounded by gunfire. He was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in the state of Arkansas.

Some of these, such as 9/11 and Elliot Rodger, I wouldn't exactly consider mass stabbings. Elliot only murdered his roommates with a knife and the rest of it was intended to be a mass shooting, which it was, and 9/11 is more noteworthy for the plane crashes rather than the stabbings, if anything it was a plane hijacking. I also don't really approve of the vehicle-ramming attack label either, as that's used to describe attacks using cars, vans and trucks.

And also, a mass murder is any event where 4 or more people are killed in a public setting with no cooling-off period and whose motive is not related to robbery or gang violence. That’s what mass murder means in it’s simplified definition. More than 4 people were stabbed to death on the planes, which would make it a mass stabbing. Since planes are used as a method of transportation and aren’t inherently weapons (ie they could be used for purposes other than for killing) that’s where it gets its vehicle-ramming distinction from.

As for Elliot Rodger, I only included him because half of his victims also died by knife.

There was some other ones that I added (like the the 2001 Greyhound bus attack) which I only added as a bonus, even though it wasn’t a mass stabbing, because only 1 person was injured by knife and the rest died from the crash.

And also, a plane is a vehicle, so it does technically count as a vehicle ramming.

Alex Hribal, committed a stabbing rampage at his high school back in 2014, injuring 21

There was a 2019 school stabbing in Belarus that killed a teacher and a student, 2 others were stabbed but survived. They were all stabbed by a 15 year old student named Vadim Miloshevsky. La Paz massacre: In October 1913 a Bolivian killed seven people and wounded many others with an axe in La Paz, Bolivia. The man, which worked for 15 years at an unidentified company, was been reprimanded by his boss. Furious, he armed himself with an axe and killed seven people and wounded many others, before being arrested.

Prednisolone has much more attention for detail than Adam Lanza.

I’ve actually done a review of some of the cases I mentioned, and it appears that the Julian Marcelino case couldn’t actually be considered a mass stabbing (i.e. a public mass killing done with a knife). The reason being is because he first stabbed three people to death inside an apartment before stabbing the other three to death on an open street. At least according to that HistoryLink article.

Another correction I’d like to add is for 9/11, the number could actually go up to 7 people dead by stabbing and 5 people injured, because you also had First Officer Thomas McGuinness on Flight 11, who I chose not to add to the list of casualties at first because the Wiki article didn’t specifically mention what happened to him. In total, about a dozen people were stabbed on three of the four planes altogether (Flights 11, 175 and 93), with 4 - 7 dying from knife wounds before the planes even reached the buildings.

Also, only three of the ones I mentioned in the OP (9/11, William Jones and John Murphy) would count as actual mass stabbings. I don’t know of any other ones that happened in the United States other than those three. I only included domestic incidents, among others, because I just wanted to inflate the list instead of giving only three examples.

The 2014 Calgary stabbing happened at a domestic setting (in this case, a house party), as did the Yangxiaoxiang stabbing spree and the Krong Pak stabbing spree. Maksim Gelman was a spree killer, so the only two on that list that would count are the Nanping school massacre and the Anne Anne Kindergarten stabbing. As for the 1947 stabbing on a train in Indonesia, only two of the victims were killed on a train, one was killed under a bridge and the rest was killed at a kongsi hut, which I’m unsure would count as either a domestic or public setting. But if it’s a place where people live, then it’s a domestic setting.

What exactly would qualify as a mass stabbing? Is it 3-4 or more people killed/stabbed? I've heard of similar definitions for mass shootings but not any for mass stabbings.

Well, the definition for a mass murder is currently defined as any event in where four or more people are killed in a public setting with no cooling-off period, and whose motive is not related to robbery or gang violence. That’s the accepted definition of the subject. Some other definitions say 3 or more, but I’ll stick with 4, since it’s easier. Btw, I believe that would be Grant Duwe’s (senior criminologist for the Minnesota Dept. of Corrections) definition of a mass murder.

Daniel Gonzalez, although he's a spree killer and not a mass murderer, still used knives in all of his attacks.

A more recent case I'd like to add was the Paris Police Headquarters Stabbing. A police officer named Mickaël Harpon converted to radical Islam and killed 3 cops and 1 staff member with a knife. He was eventually shot and killed by two officers.

An overlooked case (and also a Columbine copycat attack) was one that happened in Canada on the first anniversary of Columbine. A 15 year old teenager stabbed a student and 4 teachers with a knife. His name was never released, but he apparently had pictures of Eric and Dylan in his locker and counted down the days for the anniversary of the massacre.

I initially thought domestic mass murders/familicides weren't actually considered mass murders, but I was wrong. They're the most common type of mass murder. To date, I only know of maybe 7 actual public mass killings in the United States that used melee weapons. Such as:

Or William Stankewicz, who previously applied for buying a gun but failed a background check, so he bought a machete, smuggled it through a school's metal detectors and slashed 14 people in 2001. Also in 2001, Jason Pritchard stabbed four young schoolgirls in the neck in Alaska, injuring them. In 2008, Ian Chimenko stabbed and injured three students at a school in Pennsylvania, while using a blowtorch to hold intervening staff at bay. In 2011, an unidentified 14-year-old schoolgirl stabbed 37 classmates with a hypodermic syringe in Puerto Rico.

Mamoru Takuma killed 8 at a Elementaryschool in Osaka,Japan on June 8th 2001. He used a knife too.

It seems like whenever a stabbing spree gets attention from the media, it's one where nobody dies and then they use that to further promote gun control. The other ones in China that have killed many more get no attention in the west.

Toluca school attack: On March 1st, 2017, Carlos Alejandro Medina Millán, 16, entered a campus of the Autonomous University of Mexico State (UAEM), and injured 5 students with a disassembled axe before fleeing the scene. He was later apprehended at his home.

Charqueadas school attack: On August 21st, 2019, an unnamed 17-year-old former student entered the IEE Assis Chateaubriand armed with a hatchet and wounded 3-6 people before being disarmed and subsequently detained.

Villena school attack: On January 27th, 2017, an unnamed 17-year-old student stabbed five classmates at IES Las Fuentes before being reduced.

Severino Gomes de Araújo: Brazilian farmer that wounded 40 people in Umbuzeiro, Brazil in November 1979, before being shot by police.

In a party in the Sitio Fantasia, de Araújo began drinking and, according to police, had a psychotic break and stabbed everyone who was next to him. Panicked victims went to the exit door, but de Araújo followed them, stabbing more people, before being shot. Among the victims were twlve women and seven children.

It is not specified if the shots that hit de Araújo were fatal, or not.

On July 1, 2008, Yang Jia stabbed and killed 6 unarmed police officers and wounded 4 others at a police HQ in Zhabei, China, after alleging to be a victim of police brutality

Jose Francisco Planells knocked his neighbours Doors and attacked them with a Knife, he was apparently drugged

I feel this counts more as a spree killing, but the recent or well (a day ago) mass stabbings in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Damien Sanderson & Myles Sanderson (10 dead, 19 injured) I'm not counting the perpetrators.
