Just saw the Kyoto Animation fire today, and it remembered me of the arson attack on a bus in 1991 in Istanbul by a Turk named Kadir Çal. Also, the death toll is also similar to the arson attack today in Japan:
The story is the following:
Kadir Çal was a Turk who killed at least 34 people and wounded ten others when setting fire to a tourist bus in Istanbul, Turkey, on April 9, 1991, before perishing in the flames.
Çal was described as a bastard and beggar-type person, who lay around the streets, drank alcohol, and smelled thinner.
When the bus, which had about 65 passengers was about to take tourists, Çal went upstairs with a plastic container, and afterwards drew a knife out of his pocket, three or four men attempted to subdue him, however Çal managed to pierce the container and poured gasoline on him and in the carpet of the corridor and ignited the liquid. The blaze quickly spread, and on the panic the passengers attempted to escape, however the doors were closed, some passengers attempted to broke the windows with pieces of cement, but were unsuccessful. Survivor passenger Avgiris Nikolaos, 29, said that Çal had a large beard and also was wearing torn clothes, got a knife out of his pocket, three or four passengers tried to subdue him, however he was fast enough and pierced the plastic with flammable liquid inside, poured gasoline on his clothes and set it on fire. Then there was panic, passengers were screaming, attempting to break the windows with cement.
The fire killed at least 36, or 33 or 34 passengers, and injured at least seven to ten others.
Initially Abdurrahman Kılıç suggested that the fire started with the explosion of a gas bottle, or a burner used to heat food, but it was later shown proved to be untrue: a investigation later determined that the fire was caused by Çal.
