Subject: Why was the school demolished? Sat Jul 20, 2019 6:30 pm
I tried to search for 'demolished' and 'torn down' on this forum to see if anyone had made a post about this before, but couldn't find anything. I'm sorry if this already exists.
Why was Sandy Hook Elementary School demolished after the massacre? Were there plans of building a new school beforehand? Tearing down a school isn't normal procedure after a school shooting, even after more destructive incidents like Columbine, where pipe- and propane bombs were used and such. The cafeteria was renovated, sure, but the building wasn't torn down? So why would they tear down Sandy Hook?
I know that the truthers think it's to cover up any evidence that the thing was a hoax, but I don't think that's the case.
Please tell me what you think, or if anyone knows something I don't. The latter is very likely.
Thank you in advance.

I mean if they didn't rebuild it, a parent would be skeptical if they wanted their kid attending that school after hearing about what had happened. I can imagine it being a eerie feeling if I was a adolescent attending that school for the first time after hearing the incomprehensible atrocity. If no one attends the school they can't keep their business going.
But surely parents (and students) felt the same about Columbine, Virginia Tech, Stoneman Douglas, and other schools where a shooting happened? But they weren't completely demoshed, at least to my knowledge.

Well, with Columbine, they are just now considering demolishing the school, twenty years later! At the time, Columbine was remodeled to get rid of the library, re-arrange the sidewalks where kids died, and fix any damamge. What they did not predict, was that the entire school itself would become a tourist attraction and would never live down its history. And that they would be forced to have constant security to keep thousands of tourists each year off school grounds. That the school itself is now a shrine to Eric & Dylan.

With an Air Conditioner for example, sometimes it's better to just completely buy a new one then repair it because repairing it would cost more and it's more stressful, same goes with computers occasionally.

Because of the mental and emotional toll it would have on the victims’ families and the community. Virginia Tech is a college, whereas this was a horrific crime in which children- little babies- were murdered. I think that’s why, because it’s much more sensitive than any other location of a shooting.

So from what I can gather, this is the conclusion (so far): 1. It is easier to tear down a small elementary school, than an entire college campus, or a high-school. 2. People had learned from their mistake of leaving Columbine 'mostly' as it was, except for renovations, since this meant it became a hotspot for fans who wanted to see the place. (I now remember that in a podcast made earlier this year by CBS, for the 20th anniversary of Columbine, the school's security reported an average of 2-3 attempts of entering the school every day, by people who are interested in the massacre. Don't hope anyone on this site ever has done this.) 3. The school's security system was less than average, and it would be easier to integrate a proper system in a new building, than in the old one. 4. Sandy Hook was especially heinous in comparison to the rest, as victims were so young. This is after all, what sets the Sandy Hook massacre apart from the rest. While entering a building where 17-18 year olds were killed is one thing, walking down a corridor and knowing numerous 4-year olds died behind one of the doors is a whole another situation.
Thanks for all the responses, It gave me a better understanding of it all.
