Mass Killers who were found not guilty by reason of insanity

Mark Andrew Rowntree (Bradford Murders) Spree killer who murdered four people between December 1975 and January 1976. Rowntree was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and sentenced to be committed at a mental hospital indefinitely where stays to this day.

Frederick Moses McCallum (1969 Buffalo Narrows murders) On January 30th 1969 Frederick Moses McCallum broke into the home of the Pederson's and murdered seven people and injured one. McCallum was initially found unfit for criminal responsibility and sent to a psychiatric hospital in Ontario. In 1970, he was allowed to stand trial where he found not guilty by reason of insanity and was sent to a mental hospital until 1989.

Thomas Gordon Kosberg (1965 Kosberg Family Murders) On the 9th of December 1956 Kosberg murdered his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters with an axe and attempted to murder his other brother. Kosberg was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a mental hospital and was released in 1977. He died in 2016 aged 67.

Victor Ernest Hoffman (1967 Shell Lake Murders) On the 15th of August 1967 Hoffman broke into the home of the Peterson family and killed nine people and left one alive. Hoffman was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and in 1968 he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a mental hospital until his death in 2004.

Valdo Calocane (2023 Nottingham Attacks) Murdered three people and injured three others in 2023. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity a year later in 2024 and is now in a mental hospital.

Artyom Kazantsev after he attempted mass killing back in 2008. Trials were put down for reason of insanity.

I won't dig ofc into his personal life because that's weird asf & curiosity killed the cat sooo....

More of an attempted mass killer, but Niel Liebeskind was found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing 1 person and injuring 6 others in a school shooting in 1976.
