Subject: What are some unsolved things in mass shootings? Fri Jun 15, 2018 9:46 pm
I know that the picture of Adam Lanza with a headset on posted on 4chan is in debate whether or not it's him.
I know that Seung-Hui Cho apparently said the quote "martyrs like Eric and Dylan" in his manifesto but its whereabouts are unknown. Also witnesses reportedly saw Seung near the Virginia Tech duck pond between the two shootings and authorities were trying to find his missing hard drive in it. Also there was no confirmation if Seung was actually romantically linked to Emily Hilscher (first victim).
I know that Robert Hawkins apparently said "I'm going out in style" in his suicide notes or somewhere else which was reported by multiple news outlets but in fact no one has any evidence.
Does anyone know any other mysteries?

Well, there are a few: -Adam Lanza's motive and appearence at the time of the shooting (The newest photo the public has of him is a photo of him at 18 years old, 2 years before the shooting) -What happened to Simone Pianetti, Italian mass murderer who was never arrested and corpse never found -Why so many mass murderers are on the spectrum

Allegedly it was a post on 4chan's /b board but no conclusive proof has been brought forward confirming it really was Robert.

TJ Lane's motives are unknown, apparently it could be because of issues with a girl but we're not sure about that

What about Cho?
Are these confirmed or is it the whole “oh they must have autism?”

Yes all of these are confirmed.
I don't know about Cho.
Elliot confirmed it himself by asking multiple questions on Yahoo if people who receive benefits for Autism can buy a gun:

I had watched Elliot's father say he was never formally diagnosed although there were suggestions he had high functioning Asperger's in an interview on ABC 20/20. Then there are his Yahoo questions. We can say that he certainly displayed autistic traits although he never reached a formal diagnosis.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then I think we can rule out the possibility of it being a chicken.

According to the investigative report, Elliot was formally diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified in 2007. This means that he was on the autism spectrum and after changes to the DSM were made in 2013, he would be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder which generally includes obsolete diagnoses such as PDD-NOS and Asperger Syndrome. I'd say that most likely (based on reports of his symptoms), they may have thought that he had "atypical autism" or "subthreshold autism," which would mean that he displayed autistic traits and fulfilled some of the criteria for a diagnosis but did not meet every symptom requirement explicitly enough to qualify for an Asperger's or Autism diagnosis at the time.
Also, to the point of how many shooters had autism, Dean Mellberg was diagnosed with mild autism and Dylann Roof was also suspected of having autism after psychiatric evaluations which were carried out subsequent to his shooting. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
It's worth noting that if he does indeed have autism, it was probably mild and went unnoticed for his entire life. This is important because a post-massacre diagnosis is not possible when a shooter commits suicide so we may be missing something when that happens. For example, Marc Lepine also showed a number of traits which may be suggestive of Asperger Syndrome, but since he committed suicide, we will never really know if he was autistic. It's more likely for shooters to have Schizophrenia then Autism yet people always assume that a School/Mass Shooter must have autism.

Schizophrenia's been understood (more or less) for centuries. Autism has been poorly understood since people started learning about it a couple decades ago. If I say "that person's crazy" what's the first thing you think of? Probably a guy hearing voices or seeing people who aren't there, which is pretty much the stereotype of schizophrenics. Meanwhile if I say "that person's autistic", most people will probably struggle to come up with a concrete description. Therefore whenever someone acts out in an odd way and aren't also schizophrenic people are going to struggle to understand and will start playing armchair psychologist to try and rationalize things.

That's not unsolved, it's obvious that Cho was romantically linked to no one. Unless you mean he had an obsession with her, but I wouldn't call that romantically anything.

Is it though? The link between mental illness and their decision to commit mass murder is more clear for schizophrenic shooters, often it's due to a paranoid delusion, but I imagine that there are more autistic shooters than schizophrenic ones. Most shooters are not schizophrenic. Often it's depression and a failure to establish meaningful relationships which produces mass shooters. And autistic people are more likely to be depressed and fail at establishing meaningful relationships. Combine that with their intense focus and you have the perfect recipe for a mass shooting.

Um no, there are not more Autistic shooters than Schizophrenic ones. And of course not most shooters are not schizophrenic, but neither are they autistic. Only 5 mass shooters have been diagnosed with Autism, a lot more have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Also them being autistic alone has nothing to do with them killing people.

If there are then they're undiagnosed autistics, cause there's fewer than half a dozen mass shooters that are confirmed autistics, meanwhile there's a plethora of mas shooters who were diagnosed schizophrenics.

Cho had selective mutism, which tends to be comorbid with asperger and autism. Of course this is not always the case. I'm not aware of Elliot having any autism related disorder. I would seriously doubt this looking at the stuff he left behind.
By all evidence, including testimony of a forum member who came forward with private messages left by Smiggles, Lanza was psychotic (or speaking plainly: suffered from delusions and vivid hallucinations, losing contact with reality). This is not really typical of most people with ASD. In fact there are some professionals who say psychotics and autists function in exactly the opposite manner.
If Lanza indeed had ASD comorbid with one of the psychotic disorders, then statistics would tell us that it was likely schizophrenia. Of all psychotic disorders, schizophrenia is the most common one that is diagnosed alongside of autism. What is more, people with both autism and schizophrenia usually also have depression and are far more likely to commit suicide than people who just have ASD.
Did Lanza have both some form of ASD and Schizophrenia? I don't know, but he does fit the profile. Given the facts, this needs to be treated as a serious possibility.

Schizophrenia is more obvious than autism, so that is my assumption that there are a number of undiagnosed autistic shooters.
