Zach vs Nate?

I was thinking. Eric saw Dylan as his best friend as we know. Sue in A Mothers Reckoning said she felt Nate was Dylan's best friend. She shared more stories about them closer to the shooting. Nate and Dylan having sleepovers and cooking together late in the night, Nate being the one to call Tom on 4/20 to give him the news ;( Nate took a pair of Dylan's sunglasses before leaving town. Yet Dylan in his writings seemed still very attached to Zach!

I think Nate said he called Tom and Sue Mom and Dad. After the shooting we never heard a kind word from Zach. We heard stories about him being a bit two faced and it was Devon who did not abandon Dylan,even though early in their friendship Dylan did not like her.

So why did Dylan cling on so hard to Zach being his best friend?

I think Zach was his friend first and that Dylan was pretty loyal when it came to that.

But I think towards the end of his life when he was becoming more and more angry and recluse Nate stuck by him more than Zach. I think Zach had his own life and didn't want to deal with how Dylan was acting.

I think for the most part that Zach felt utterly betrayed by Dylan. He sees him as the monster that Dylan always hid from him. Dylan was the 2 faced one and I think it really hurt him

Nate I think turned out to be a loyal friend to both Eric AND Dylan, he even had a thank you to them in their senior yearbook.

It is not something we will ever know but I do wonder if that caused friction between Zach and Devon before and certainly after the shootings. Devon remained loyal where as Zach didn't.

I agree with you though, Zach was probably horrified and hurt by his friend. Which is why he was automatically like "Dylan was not smart enough to get into college and we tried to get rid of him as the sound person, he just sucked." Thinking of all the bad things about him because of course he was an awful person, look at what he did...

I wonder if he was allowed to walk on graduation day (I know Brooks, Robyn, Nate and Chris weren't) but Sue said there was like 20 people... but that seems excessive. There also is still inklings that he went to Dylan's funeral but I don't think he did. His name was on one of the lists in the 11k as having gone.

Maybe Dylan did suck at the sound board...we know he didn't really seem to take anything outside of NBK and his own feelings seriously lol

Being that Devon and Zach are not together anymore something broke them apart. Wouldn't surprise me if it had something to do with Columbine

True, the only person who said he was really good at it was his mom....

I would love to hear more about Dylan co-directing a play...

You're right, once they started solidifying NBK that was their universe, that was what they were motivated for and everything else was just going through the motions.

My mom thought I could be on Broadway... well yes if I had a ticket for a show mom....

I always think back to Eric's words, "it's weird knowing you're going to be dead in two weeks". I'd be nervous as all hell.

I think Zach was closer to them, especially in the things like the night raids - stuff that parents were not aware of. Then he drifted away from them, I think Eric didn't care but Dylan missed him. Dylan at some point I beleive considered Zach as a potential shooter. Then Zach got a GF and went his own way and Dylan imho didn't understand or didn't want to agree with that.

Now in the information that surfaced, Nate comes off as a generally friendly person who got along great with a lot of people "with malice twoards none". Some people mentioned that Zach was into dark things, but not Nate.

True, Zach was a bit of a lose cannon too. He put a threatening note in Devon's ex boyfriends locker, was part of the rebel missions and I think his senior quote was "I hate this school."
