The story of Tiago João da Silva is a story that begins in 1997 and ends in 2005. It is the story of a child who creates fame and gains a periphrasing of a spider boy for climbing buildings to steal. He becomes famous for the numerous escapes he has made from various child and adolescent shelters. And so, every year, every month that itinerary was repeated. But when he turned 18, he was murdered. At his funeral were his father, three social workers and four curious people. Spider-boy died as he lived: alone.
Tiago was born on December 3, 1988. He was 9 years old when in August 1997, police recorded his first action: he climbed the Ticiana building in Madalena, west of Recife, from where he took money and cell phones. Thus began the saga of Tiago João da Silva. And there came more buildings scaled and more robberies in the neighborhood of Piedade in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Metropolitan Region of Recife.
The fame and notoriety of the spider-boy character was born at the time. When he was 10 he tried to steal a military man's house, but he was arrested and taken to the Guardianship Council where he fled the same day. At the end of December, the attempt to steal home appliances from a prosecutor's house in the neighborhood of Candeias in Jaboatão dos Guararapes was again arrested and sent to the shelter of the Foundation for Child and Adolescent Protection (Fundac) in the city of Vitória de Santo Antão , forest area of the State of Pernambuco.
After three days in prison, he performed his fifth escape from the shelter, but was recaptured on the same day. His life was already outlined by robberies, arrests and escapes. Until death.
1998The following year (1998), TJS, which is named as required by the Statute of the Child and Adolescent for being under 18, is already known by Pernambuco as a spider-child, continued to climb buildings (buildings Sobrado de Boa Vigem, Ipê, Costa do Mar and others) and stealing the buildings. Prisoner, has now been taken to the Child and Adolescent Police (DPCA) Board.
In some of his actions he was accompanied by the younger brother AJS, 10, who did not go up in the buildings and was waiting underneath.
When they were arrested, they smelled of shoe glue and carried $ 7 in their pockets. They spent only three hours in the Guardianship Council and fled. In late December, it was the older brother MJS, 13, who was with him when he was, once again, arrested.
TJS was thin and talked little. She answered the questions by shaking her head and looking the other way. Do not stop chewing nails. The father, Antônio da Silva, 54, cried when he said: "It's a lot of humiliation. I just wanted a judge to arrest him and let him leave at the age of 18." According to the father, TJS began to give work after the death of the mother, seven years ago. In the words of José Rufino, counselor, TJS almost always behaved well when he came to the Guardianship Council, but sometimes he was very nervous and he even threw rocks at people.
He added that TJS was enjoying the news and felt like a hero.
This notoriety increased after he specialized in fleeing shelters and institutions aimed at protecting at-risk children. Judge Luiz Carlos feared "so much popularity would eventually dictate that boy's death sentence. Some measure had to be taken before he appeared dead in some vacant lot."
However, Judge Bartolomeu Bueno had a different position when he ruled: "This spider-child can not be considered unimpeachable. It has real and subjective danger potential that needs to be considered." Promoter Laíse Queiroz appeared with a third position on TJS, when she stated that the problem was in the absence of preventive policies that could avoid situations as cruel as that of the spider boy. "The society failed because it failed to guarantee this child minimum conditions of survival. This kid was adopted by the streets and his actions are a consequence of this abandonment."
In all these years, TJS was barely heard and never interviewed by reporters, even though some of its statements, while in state custody, were published in 1998. In its first statement, TJS eliminated any doubts about the his career and stated that he has invaded apartments since he was 9 years old. However, the police did not believe it and had his eyebrow examined. TJS liked to flaunt his exploits and seemed to enjoy it. He said he was initially arrested because he missed the time of the invasion and the villagers were already waking up. "I usually get into the buildings around 4:00 am At that time everyone is asleep.
To get into the building I use the lightning rod and take the time to enter when I see an open window, and then I go out the front door, down the elevator. At this time, the porter is always dozing. He added that he has the courage to kill, but he never killed anyone. And he made clear what he wants and what his position in the world: I do not want to leave the streets, I do not want to stop stealing and I do not want to study. I like toys and if I could get a Christmas present I would like a bicycle."
1999Early in January, TJS attempted to rob a house in Imbiribeira, a neighborhood in Recife, but was arrested and taken to the Dias Cardoso Battalion in the San Martin neighborhood, and the next day brought back to the Santa Luzia Resocialization Center in the Iputinga neighborhood . There, he spent 11 months and for showing good behavior was sent back to his family. He ran away days later. TJS was almost daily in the media. Already there was comment of the type: he can be only tame by killing.
Judge Eduardo Guilliod Maranhão moderated when he said that "he still can not choose what is best for his life." On the other hand, the press tried to emphasize the signs of recovery of TJS in relation to the beginning of the hospitalization, like the participation in the swimming championship, where it gained three medals. He received psychological counseling and used to go by bus to medical appointments outside the center, accompanied only by an educator.
2000Now (January 18) TJS returned to attend the Pracinha de Boa Viagem. He was found asleep by the homeless people who called the police.
Next to him was a tube of glue. In September he robbed buildings in Piedade and Casa Forte. And as always happens, he was arrested and must "undergo a new socio-educational measure". He stayed at the Semi-Liberty Mansion in the neighborhood of Várzea, where he was obliged to go to bed every night. But he ran away and was gone.
2001TJS was detained at Fundac in the city of Abreu e Lima. He underwent a detoxification treatment at Centro Eulâmpio Cordeiro, in the neighborhood of Cordeiro.
2002When he left the Eulâmpio Cordeiro Center, he lived in the streets, sleeping in Peixinhos, Olinda, where he was fed by a resident. He was arrested when he attempted to break into a parking lot of the John Paul II Residential Complex in Cajueiro, north of the capital, with a pocketknife. With him was a boy named "Pirro", of greater age.
Again, he was recaptured when he was in the garage of Ed. Vivenda das Orquídeas, in the neighborhood of Torre. TJS was now stealing residences and automobiles. "I stopped scaling buildings, I just burglarized houses that I used to get into at night, when people slept, I often went through the swingers, and sometimes I went through the porch and carried the bags into the living room and ran away without anyone seeing me.
I was only arrested this time because the security guards saw us trying to get the tape player off. TJS also reported that it stopped sniffing glue and started smoking marijuana. He says that he lives with his father, but sometimes he goes to the street because at home "it's bad." For Ivan Porto, president of Fundac, the problem of JWS is emotional. "On other occasions when he was on Fundac he underwent a psychiatric examination and the specialist found serious emotional problems. He started to rob after his mother died and the alcoholic father would not know how to take care of him. If this kid does not have an expert with him he will not recover."
2005 - last year of Tiago, the spider-boy[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The invasion of four apartments in a building in the Boa Viagem neighborhood made police believe that the author was the spider boy, since he fled in early May from Fundac in the neighborhood of Casa Amarela and because of anonymous denunciations to have seen the TJS in the district of Prazeres, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the great Recife. It should be noted that up until now neither the police nor the newspapers had had a picture of the spider-boy.
However, in mid-May, he was found under the bed of the service room hugged with a DVD player, from apartment 402 of a building on the waterfront of Piedade. He had climbed and invaded the building about 1:30 in the morning. Trapped, he was sent to the GPCA police station and then taken to the Fundac where he fled after a rebellion that took place at the end of November, and went to hide in an aunt's house.
On the threshold of completing 18 years, between December 1 and 5, TJS climbed another building in the southern area of Recife. Delegate Luiz Andrey wanted to prove that the robbery occurred after day 3 and thus, at the age of 18, Tiago João da Silva, committed not an infraction, but a crime. The truth is that this time James was not arrested.
A few days later, he entered the Hospital da Restauração (HR), with two bullet holes, the main emergency room in the metropolitan area of Recife, with the false name of Rafael da Silva. Tiago said he had a quarrel with traffickers from the Veloso favela in the Boa Viagem neighborhood, and in the exchange of shots he was shot in the right hand and in the belly. He added that he went to buy crack stones when he was shot by the dealer because of a brawl. On December 9, James was recaptured by police at the hospital and taken to GPCA. Then he was introduced to the Childhood and Youth Ministry to be sent to Fundac in the Cape of St. Augustine, great Recife.
Nine days after being captured, we will find James hospitalized in the trauma department of HR, nurse 601, to undergo surgery. The operation needed to be authorized by a person in charge and the Fundac located Tiago's father. João Antonio da Silva, the father, was taken to the HR to release the surgery, but can not decide for his son because he arrived completely drunk at the hospital. James was thinking the doctors would amputate his hand and did not want to undergo surgery on his hand.
The father was in no condition to help his son. The night of the 18th, one of the surveillance officers was missing, and the other one, at dawn, handcuffed James on the stretcher and went to the bathroom. When he returned the patient was no longer there. The agent reportedly missed James at 00:30 on Sunday, but only recorded his escape at the shrine of the Santo Amaro police station at 10:22 a.m. It was the 39th escape of Tiago João da Silva and also the last.
At 3 o'clock he was seen in a gafieira. At 4.30 the Homicide Plan was informed that there was a body with 14 perforations of 380-caliber pistols and 9 mm guns in a square in Boa Viagem. The shots were on the head, the chest and the hands. Street boys recognized the body as James's. Delegate Ivonete Silva, of the Homicide Center, said that the characteristics of the murder signaled the desire to exterminate him.
"They wanted to end his fame. We counted six shots in one hand," he remarked. According to witnesses, at the time of the crime, James was sleeping in the square with a woman (girlfriend?). Two men, on a motorcycle, would have boarded him and fired the shots. The body of Tiago João da Silva was taken at 7am to IML (Institute of Legal Medicine) in Recife and was identified by a social worker from Fundac since no relatives attended IML.
December 20 - burial[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Tiago João da Silva, 18, known as a spider-boy, was buried yesterday afternoon in a shallow grave of the Santo Amaro Cemetery in central Recife. In death, the same abandonment he had in life. There was no wake, crying, praying, and no wreath. Of the family, only the father, João Antônio da Silva, accompanied the burial. In the solitary procession, he received hugs from some strangers. When the coffin reached the graveyard around 1:00 p.m., he opened the display and closed quickly after looking at his son's face. A little before, still in the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML), he said. "I'm relieved. My son is now guarded. Before he was trapped but was not guarded.I'm still." (Jornal do Commercio - Caderno Cidades, page 03, 21.12.2005)
A blue jacket wore the now lifeless body of Tiago João da Silva, 18. The anti-hero who has climbed like a spider dozens of buildings in the South Zone of Recife since childhood died as much fame but without any admirer around. At the time of his burial, yesterday at the Santo Amaro Cemetery at 1:20 pm, only his father, the scissors grinder João Antônio da Silva, 62, three Fundac employees, a friend and four inquisitors who were in the graveyard by chance. [...] Tiago or "spider boy" was a newspaper cover, television news and much commented between the wheels of the middle and upper class, who both bothered with their climbs, but had no wake. Moreover, he had no prayer to order the body or even a small plaque or flowers upon the shallow grave in which he was buried. (Diário de Pernambuco - Urban Life Notebook, pp. B10, 21.12.2005).
Quite melancholy, Tiago was buried yesterday, around 1:30 p.m., in block 36 of the Cemetery of Santo Amaro. Only his father, João Antônio da Silva, 62, three Fundac social workers and four inquisitors followed the small procession. When he was near the grave, John Antony opened the coffin and placed a small bouquet of flowers inside it. Enthusiastic enough, Fundac social workers accompanied the burial from afar.
