Subject: 30 Second BT leaked audio Sat Feb 01, 2014 12:44 pm
I just listened to the 30-second clip of audio from the Basement Tapes, with a corresponding transcript on YouTube . Makes me think that if this is representative of what the dialogue is on most of the BTs, which sounds like a lot of bitching, whining, complaining, and profanity, that it would probably get on my nerves after a while. Listening to Eric would be especially bothersome for me, I think!

Dylan's observation: "Jesus, you're on a roll.." Oh, GAWD, quit your endless bitchin' REB.

Haha yes, I would love to watch them just to see how Dylan reacted ("acted") to all of that constant banter from Eric.

Mm, yes, I think that this is possibly the least interesting part of the tapes in some respects. I think the scene itself would speak volumes about how they were together -- and fed off each other -- but I don't think it'd tell us anything remotely interesting apart from that. I'm far more interested in Eric's separate scenes, both of them going to get some of their gear, the showcase of what was hidden in Eric's room, and the scene they shot in Dylan's bedroom. I don't think those endless rants are going to tell us anything new, although it'd be interesting to hear their voices and see their body language during those. (Honestly, I feel like muting the entire tapes at least once just to focus on them instead of on what they're saying. See if anything surprising comes along there.)

Agreed. What I noticed in this leaked portion is just how much of an act Eric is putting on for Dylan. Dylan says "What would Jesus do? What would I do?" and then Eric goes off like a volcano. You can get a sense that this was a common dynamic between the two and it really challenges the idea that Eric was anybody's leader. In just this short snippet I can feel Eric's need to please Dylan and his need to "puff up" and act like an even bigger psycho than the next guy.

Great point, if this is all we ever get in terms of the BTs in this snippet, and let's face it folks, there is a very good chance that will be the case, it does offer quite a bit of insight for so such a very brief clip. Makes me wonder about what kind of really advanced psychoanalysis of the pair and their dynamics could be done if one had access to the tapes, even knowing that much of it was just bravado for an audience that never got to see them. Maybe I should petition JeffCo for access to the BTs in terms of my academic research and a scholarly article??? I could tell them I don't necessarily need to "see" them, I would be fine with just the audio!

Not sending the BT out to media outlets was one of the boys' biggest blunders. And they even anticipated it by guessing the tapes would be withheld from the public or only let out in pieces. They knew it would happen and didn't do anything to work around it, kind of like the way they acted in regard to their propane bombs. They thought the sprinklers might put out the bombs before they could explode and just went ahead with the plan anyway. The two primary anchors of their whole NBK plan: bombing and publicity for the event were handled in slipshod fashion.
I think this shows that fantasizing about NBK and preparing for it was a long-standing coping mechanism as much as it was an actual, pragmatic plan. The pragmatic plan came together in bits and bursts, while the emotional relationship to the idea was a constant and necessary reality.

That's a really great point, gustopoet! They did sorta do things half-assed, maybe even somehow (subconsciously) trying to subvert the actualization of NBK, which in their minds (as you write, a "long-standing coping mechanism") had already been played out in glorious fashion a thousand times.

Thanks!
And, yes, that may explain why they didn't go looking a lot harder for the people on their shit-lists; they'd already killed them a thousand times over in their convos, journals, yearbooks, DOOM, and in their daydreams. A lot of people point out how they seemed to lose interest in killing people pretty quickly and attribute this to their being squeamish about killing people up close. However, according to the witness testimony and 911 tapes, they both also seemed to enjoy killing people up close at first...
What is mentioned far less often is the fact that they never seemed to lose interest in trying to kill cops. More specifically Eric never lost interest in shooting at the police right up to the closing minutes of his life. I say Eric because he is the one who opened fire on Gardner and the little shootout on his own, then broke off from killing kids in the library to take pot-shots at the "pigs" and then led Dylan back to the library to shoot at the cops before they killed themselves. I think when push came to shove Eric, in particular, had even more of an appetite to kill cops than kids.

And I think that one goes back to early stages of '98 when he is rallying against "people telling him what to do" in his journal. He specifically mentions authorities and the fallout from the van break-in in those instances where he rages against not having the freedom to do whatever the fuck he wants. I think something in Eric snapped quite thoroughly the minute he was confronted with law enforcement in an influential capacity over his life, and I suspect that the whole 'going NBK' is as much a fuck-you to JeffCo as it is a fuck-you to everyone else.

I know people who have seen this leak and were disappointed just because of its short duration. Uh, pardon me fellas, but THIS IS THE CLOSEST THING WE HAVE to the freakin' tapes. I treasure this clip with my heart! The Basement Tapes (which will remain perfectly sealed by Jeffco for as long as we researchers are standing) are in such far reach from us. We have footage of E/D in Radioactive Clothing, Hitmen for Hire, and yeah, those are definitely fun to watch. I find it exciting just to see them in motion because... well, they're infamous for committing the worst high school shooting in the country (although that's not what they were targeting for). Yet, when you perceive them from a general point, they were just nerdy and rowdy teenagers. So just to hear their voices, (even if it's just them bitching about how pathetic Christian followers are), gets me squealing.

Apparently this leaked audio isn't from the basement tapes, but rather another tape that Eric and Dylan made. Not sure if this info is valid or not, just throwing it out there.

It's from the basement tapes. Darrell Scott recorded the thirty second voice clip and used it as 'proof' that Eric and Dylan specifically targeted his daughter.

Sorry to bring up an old thread- But what I have always found interesting is how codependent they were of one another. It's almost like they were seeking approval from each other. Always having to one-up the other. Not just Eric. Eric started it to begin with. Eric: Shut the fuck up, Nick, you laugh too much! And those two girls sitting next to you, they probably want you to shut the fuck up, too! Jesus! Rachel and Jen . . . and . . . whatever. Dylan: I don’t like you, Rachel and Jen, you’re stuck up little bitches, you’re fucking little . . . Christian, Godly little whores! Eric: Yeah . . . “I love Jesus! I love Jesus!” — shut the fuck up! Dylan: What would Jesus do? What the fuck would I do? Eric: I would shoot you in the motherfucking head! Go Romans! Thank God they crucified that asshole.
It's just the constant fueling of each other's fire per say. Bouncing back and forth between each other as if to say "Well, I hate this more and I hate this and that and blah blah blah". They really were a deadly mix
