What if instead of having the shitty guns they used, they used something like an M16 or an AK ? Surely the death toll would be quite higher.

M16s are not available for civilian firearm usage; you're thinking of the AR-15, which looks similar but functions differently (ARs are semi-automatic, not fully automatic). Of course in terms of killing potential there's little difference between an AR-15 and a Ruger Mini-14 anyways, the real difference depends on what ammunition the weapon is chambered in - .223 or 5.56.

In theory they could've acquired AKs but I assume it was outside their price range or simply wasn't at the gun show. They could've also likely bought a couple of SKS rifles (which, like the AK, is typically chambered in 7.62x39) but I doubt they would've been a fan of using stripper clips.

They almost certainly bought the guns they did both for convivence's sake (low price for both the weapons and ammunition plus only two ammo variants to account for - 9mm and 12Ga) and because it looked cool and resembled the weapons they saw in movies, books, and video games. If you look at some of their early drafts for the weapons they wanted it includes idiotic fantasy picks like Desert Eagles and the Calico M900.

Not really. They were shooting innocent people huddled under tables at point blank range with the muzzle of the gun pointed directly at they're faces/body, at that point any firearm/caliber will kill someone or leave them with life altering damages.

Eric originally wrote about obtaining Calicos, like [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] mentioned, but they quickly learned they were unobtainable because of the '94 AOW ban that was in place. They both wrote about Uzi's as well.

Any AR15, or AK would have been unobtainable as well at least in they're normal configuration at this time. Both of them probably saw them "unfit" due to how they differed from they're pre-ban configuration (they didn't look like the gats they saw in the movies)...

Also, not very easy to conceal rifles, probably why they strayed away from rifles in general. They sawed-off the shotguns for this exact reason.

I think they just wanted firearms that they could easily conceal, obtain a large amount of ammo/magazines for, all at the same time without blowing they're budget.
