For what it's worth, this is what the FBI BAU had to say about that hypothesis. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Adam was undoubtedly influenced by previous shooters in some way (and some investigators believe that he was focused on trying to learn from their techniques and mistakes) but ultimately, the BAU didn't seem convinced that he was trying to "outscore" anyone, as it had been reported early on after his spreadsheet was discovered. Despite some early statements in the media suggesting that it was a "scorecard" of sorts, Adam described the spreadsheet as a research tool to assist in "answering statistical questions."
The absence of evidence does not definitively prove that he did not view the attack as a competition but this is what they said in their summary.
Edit: Here's a useful document that covers the subject of the thread. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] (Thanks to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for linking it in another thread a while ago.)
The last page has a chart that shows how one attacker influences the next, beginning with Columbine. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Actually most killers draw some kind of influence from each other.
The reason Eric/Dylan may have had more influence is because of all the media around their case.

Alvaro Castillo probably hoped he could have beaten columbine as well at least he was very obsessed with it. Nikolas Cruz apparently mentioned elliot rodger on youtube.

Raoul Moat could have been motivated by Derrick Bird as the Shootings happened within 5 weeks of each other, and they changed the way people thought about everything.

I don't think he was, in my opinion he commit his shooting just because he hated the police and his ex told him that her current boyfriend was a police officer, making him finally snap and want revenge.

You'd think that there'd be someone out there who would want to outdo Bryant's very goofy mannerisms.

No, but both were influenced by Julian Knight. The influence he had on Michael Ryan was more direct, they both did their shooting the same year, but apparently Martin Bryant asked what Knight pleaded. At the very least both were aware of Knight.

I agree, it's a shame the Australian documentary of the police interview has been taken offline.

We have no way of knowing if Michael Ryan was influenced by Knight, however i do believe the images of Knight's shooting and news coverage of said shooting flashed through Ryan's mind the moment after he shot his dog and thus was a major factor in causing him to decide to carry out a rampage shooting. But like i say, we can never truly know.

I read another thread on this forum on Tim K. and the person who posted it mentions what seems to be a document of some sort where it says Tims German and Ethnics teacher made the class write about the topic 'Tougher gun laws, yes or no?' where Tim mentioned in the essay about computer games, Erfurt, and reaction of mass shootings by the state

I'm honestly surprised that nobody's credited Omar Mateen. You think an aspiring shooter would seek to imitate someone with a high body count, but I guess the religious nature of his rampage put people off.

Omar Mateen's attack featured an excellent demonstration of police/SWAT tactics in response, considering how they breached certain areas of the nightclub to allow for hostages to escape and eventually gunned down the perpetrator.

It's his motive. The next Muslim mass shooter may claim to take some inspiration from him, but other than that I think his imitators will be few and far between.
