Santa Fe High School shooting leaves at least 10 dead, suspect in custody

A high school in Texas was placed on lockdown Friday after reports of an active shooter, police say.

The incident occurred at Santa Fe High School and officers were on the scene.

The Santa Fe school district posted a statement on their Facebook page Friday regarding the incident.

"This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The district has initiated a lockdown. We will send out additional information as soon as it is available," the statement read.

A shooting has been reported at a high school in the southeastern Texas city of Santa Fe, officials said Friday.

A gunman walked into an art class at Santa Fe High School and began firing what looked like a shotgun, a witness told CNN affiliate KTRK.

The witness told KTRK she saw a girl shot in the leg.

Details about whether anyone was in custody or what led to the shooting weren’t immediately available.

Aerial video from the scene showed several police officers outside the school. Some were searching students and their backpacks.

Angelica Martinez, a 14-year-old student, told CNN she and her schoolmates were being evacuated at one point “like it’s a fire drill.”

“We were all standing (outside), but not even five minutes later, we started hearing gunshots,” she said.

“I didn’t see anybody shooting, but like (the gunshots) were kind of spaced,” she said, adding she heard about four shots.

The entire school district is on lockdown, district officials said.

Multiple people were killed, and others were injured, in a shooting on Friday morning at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Tex., according to local officials. A suspect was in custody.

At least three people were killed, according to Mark Henry, the Galveston County judge, the county’s top elected official. The injured included at least one police officer, Mr. Henry said.

Joe Giusti, a Galveston County commissioner, said the gunman opened fire inside the school at about 7:45 a.m., around the time school was about to start for the day. He said the injured officer worked for the Santa Fe school district as a school resource officer.

The gunman was uninjured, Mr. Giusti said.

There were unconfirmed claims that "pipe bombs" were thrown into the art classroom.

Sophomore Zach Muehe told Fox 26 that the gunman, a student from his American football class, had a sawn off shotgun and a pistol.

He said the teen entered his class and began shooting.

Zach said he ran to another classroom to alert a teacher, who pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the school.

Zach said of the suspect: "He always walked around in a trench coat."

Students who witnessed a shooting at a Texas high school Friday morning described a frantic scene, with teachers yelling for students to run as shots rang out. One student told CBS affiliate KHOU he heard as many as 20 gunshots.

Another described seeing the shooter wearing a trench coat and armed with a sawed off shotgun before barricading themselves inside their classroom.

Harris County Sherriff Ed Gonzalez Harris County said there "could be 8 to 10 fatalities" from the shooting at Santa Fe High School, about 30 miles southeast of Houston.

Gonzalez says the majority of the dead are students.

The sheriff says one person is in custody and a second person has been detained.

Gonzalez says a police officer is among the injured but the extent of the officer's injuries is unknown.

Student Damon Rabon told CBSN he was one classroom away from where the shooting happened in the art hall. He said he was in shop class when he and other students heard "this loud banging, kind of ringing noise." He said at first they thought a desk fell or someone hit the shop door.

Then, they heard the same noise three or four more times.

Rabon said the substitute teacher went out and looked and saw the shooter, who he described as a short male wearing a black trench coat carrying a backpack and armed with a sawed-off shotgun.  The teacher got everyone back in class and told everyone to get down and they barricaded the door.

The student said the substitute teacher pulled the fire alarm in the hopes that other students would evacuate.

Rabon described several minutes of chaos with students crying before they reminded each other to use active shooter training techniques they had learned in drills several times already that year. They barricaded the door, shut off the lights and sheltered in place.

"It was just so scary, you could hear him walking, you'd hear him walking right past our classroom," Rabon said. "You could hear the shots, 'boom, boom, boom.' Thanks God he didn't come into our classroom."
Rabon said he believed the shooter to be a former student, either a sophomore or a junior. He described him as a quiet and "weird" type of guy who stood out because he wore a trench coat every day.

Tyler, a senior who was inside the school, told KHOU his friend saw someone walking down the hallway with a gun. Someone pulled a fire alarm, and as students ran outside he heard three shots. Once outside, he said he heard four more shots, ran to the treeline for cover and jumped a fence to flee.

CNN is currently saying that there are nine students and one teacher dead.

A doctor was also talking about six patients treated and released plus two who required surgery, where one is in critical condition and another in fair condition. They were high school students and all were there for gunshot wounds.

Police arrested a student suspect and detained a second person, Santa Fe school officials confirmed.

The dead are expected to include students and staff, according to a senior law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak about the investigation.

The attacker was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, a pistol, a shotgun and pipe bombs, the official said.

"Officers inside encountered a bloody mess in the school," the source said, adding, "Evidently this guy threw pipe bombs all in there. We don't know if any of them went off."
